Default Check engine light

Do the check engine lights come on after so many miles to remind you to service them on the 1999 Rangers like they do on some vehicles? Ours came on the last time we drove it,but it runs fine. I checked it with the Ford Rotunda T Handle tester and run a diagnostic scan on it and it said it passed. I've got a couple different diagnostic cards for the tester and I checked it with both of them and it passed both times. I guess I could try doing it with the cords to also have it hooked up to the PCM too but I'm not quite sure where it's at on this truck. I've tried looking it up but I've gotten a few different locations. It's a Supercab 4x4 with a 3.0.
Any help would be appreciated.

Just get a OBD2 tester to read the code. The check engine light only comes on if a code is caused by a fault.Get the code and if it's a minor sensor or misfire erase it and see if it come back.If you do buy a OBD2 code reader pay a little more and buy one that will read ABS and airbag codes. That's why I own two of them now.

That's what the tester I'm using is suppose to do,it's the 1 the Ford Services Garages used up until 2,006. It's got different cards you can put into the tester for different systems on the vehicle, reprogramming etc. I was using the OBD2 diagnostic card when I checked it and it said it passed. Maybe to get an accurate reading I need to have it plugged into the PCM too instead of just the diagnostic link plug, not sure. I have another code reader but the plug is different on the '99 than the '94s and it won't plug into it,that's why I got this tester since it's the 1 Ford used and it tests vehicles from the mid 80s all the way up to 2,006. I may have to get another code reader when I get the money but that won't be for a couple of months.

I did some more checking with the tester and the only code in the system was for a gross leak in the evaporative system. I cleared the codes and the engine light went out. Might be time for a new evaporative canister.
