Default How to drain the torque converter

Is there a way to get the torque converter oil out? I would like to drain it and removing the pan and filter a three times seems cumbersome. Seems like the return side cooling line would pump the oil out of the torque converter, but which line is the return. I would be adding fluid into the fill tube at the same rate. Then when the oil comes out clean, shut it off. Also does the transmission need to be in N or P. Anyone do this on a 1999 ford ranger 4R44E. any advice appreciated.

J
