Default Where to start troubkeshooting

Around 55 - 60 mph I lose a lot of power, starts to smell of burning oil mixed of coolant.

I suspect a leaking intake gasket and a torque converter on its way out, this problem has been getting worse in the last few days, but the oil and tranny fluid seems clean ish and at normal levels, coolant seems full. I can't even think of where to start, anyone run into a similar situation?

damn i have 04 too but only 114000 miles no problem with mine , sound like gasket maybe

I have 199k miles, never seen an engine light, but I suspect t gasket leak, I'll test it later

Have you tried performing a cylinder test or leak down test to see if you have a bad gasket yet?

Not to send you into worry but you could have a cracked head between a coolant jacket and an oil passage. With heating to OT it expands enough to make you lose power but I'm betting on head gasket or a lower I/M plenum gasket which is far better in my opinion. A leak down test would confirm that of course.

Another member of Ford Ranger enthusiasts had a rather interesting method that seems to be pretty good for the driveway mechanic.

I’ll do a leak test, then do this test cause it interests me for sure, could I still have a blown head gasket or cracked head if my engine temp remains in normal ranges?

To some degree yes. Reason why I say that is because unlike an aftermarket gauge such as Autometer, Defi, or others.. OEM gauges are generally static. They really only show an extreme when cold, empty, even dead [Almost, battery wise] or near/commencing a failure.

Using the Ford Mercury Marauder as an example that had the gauges under the radio. The first year were real gauges and Ford learned quite quickly that a mass rush of Ford Patrons were freaking out watching the needles on oil pressure drop when the car came to a light or a stop in general. In went the Static gauge which keeps a nominal resistance to stay in the middle per say and now no warranty/Service claims or issues.

So it is possible.

As silly as the above sounds, prior to "LIKES" and reviews on dealerrater and others.. When you get tagged or penalized for calls, visists, or overall comments on experiences. Ford wasnt looking to have their numbers go up or down for that matter in the case of really a NON issue item.

Cool, that's good to know!

My leak test proved one small leak kinda hard to find, I'll do another test after the rain in a few days, if I get the same result I'll begin my plans of replacing intake gasket.
