About to purchase a '95 Ranger, need advice
Hey guys!
My vehicle was totaled recently, and I decided I only want to spend a couple of thousand $$ on a new vehicle to use for work. My choice so far is narrowed to a '95 with 82,000 miles on it.
When plugged into VINCheck, I was told the 5 year cost of ownership is $35,000 (?!?!?!?!). That can't be accurate. What on earth could break adding to those types of numbers, almost $500 per month in repairs and maintenance? No way.
Does anyone have insight on this? Would I be better off spending $3,500 on a 2007 or 2008 with 150-170k miles? This is a very clean one owner vehicle and seems like a great buy. Is $2,000 fair? Is there anything I should be looking out for on a 95 or on any ranger in general?
Advice here would be GREATLY appreciated as I need to buy tomorrow. Offending driver's insurance has paid out and is kicking me out of my rental!

No thats not accurate, i bought my 04 with 180k miles on it for 1600 and have spend 1100 a year in maintenance, i see the 95-97 body sgyle s in the scrap yard all the time with 200k+ on them so that's not a BAD buy, depends more so on imhow it's been, 23 years and low mileage could mean it sat for a while, give the truck a good once over.
In my opinion the newer the better, the 04+ had a costly timing chain revision so I believe those are your best bets, if you can budget $3000 you'll find a great ranger.

Re: About to purchase a '95 Ranger, need advice
This one appears to be in good condition. What should I️ be looking for? Any mechanical issues that come up I’m willing to fix. I’m mechanically inclined and my neighbors know more than me and would help. I️ really just need a cheap work truck, it’ll never leave town and our speed limits here are 50 and below.
It’s a manual 4 cylinder. Picture attatched.
My main question - does anyone else see that bow going on in between the cab and the bed? Is the frame warped or bent? Or is that how it sits to help distribute load?
My secondary questions are what are some specific things to look for in general and more specifically on this year model?

Re: About to purchase a '95 Ranger, need advice
I’m having trouble finding fairly priced rangers under 150k miles in my area. I️ will be driving this one maybe 6,000-9,000 per year, and after a few months work it will have already been cheaper than leasing a new midsize pickup. Hence why it’s great for work. Just need some guidance on what to look for, I️ feel like this was a good find since we don’t get too many low mileage posts here. Im going to look at it tomorrow morning and told him we have a deal as long as everything seems to be in working order and good condition.

You should look underneath, look at the frame, all of it for cracks, holes, substantial rust, large flaky shit not just surface shit, that’s a big item on these trucks, you should look for leaks, any signs of a previous fire, bad repair work, signs of an accident, these things are good examples.
same for under the hood, bad cheap repairs, signs of a fire, signs of serious leaks (if it’s spotless and the rest of the truck is as should be expected then somethings up.
Look under the bed liner, of the bed is rotted to shit then that’s an extra cost, I replaced mine in a Saturday for $275 after ordering new boots.
Start it, hear it run, let it cycle for a moment so you can make sure you’ve heard everything work. No dash lights, when the key is in on position but truck is off you should see EVERY light light up, if you don’t the bulb has been removed or electrical tape has been put under dash, happens all the time.
Drive it, feel wear and tear items, pads, shoes, belt and tensioner, power steering, etc.

Re: About to purchase a '95 Ranger, need advice
I would want to see if the timing belt and water pump had been done, at 82k it’s due for one if it hasn’t been done yet. Not an overly expensive job.

Try to peak at the timing belt feel the clutch and transmission how it feels when you press it or change gears look at the oil see how black it is or if it’s clean or if it’s really like honey thick just run away he is hiding something
