Crazy...2011 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 extended cab
I just bought a 2011 FR XLT 4.0 , 2 door ext cab, with 42,000 miles...it is my third ranger in 16 years...BUT it has a couple of issues??
There is a half oval black thing mounted on the roof over the passenger seat. It is about 4 in long. I have no idea why it's there. Looks like half a black egg...
There is a small red light mounted under the dash next to the hood release...I have no idea it's function but it looks to be a after marked install..
LAST, I noticed that the bed/box bolt that is at the front of the bed on the driver side is loose. Tightening does nothing...it's like there are no threads in the clip anchor nut. I can see the threads down there and it just feels like the bolt doesn't reach them for some reason...This bolt is just above the side of the fuel tank.
Any ideas would be appreciated...

The thing on the roof and under the dash probably have to do with GPS tracking Fleet truck type deal.
The bolt spinning is probably because it's rusted completely into two pieces.

That half oval black thingy on the passenger side of the roof on my 2011 XLT is the factory SiriusXM radio antenna. Bought the truck new. The stock radio on my 11 XLT came with a free 3 or 6 month subscripion (don't remember for sure). The Sirius stations sounded echoey and tin like compared to the radios AM/FM and CD. Never renewed!
No small red light near my hood release.

Re: Crazy...2011 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 extended cab
The thing on the roof could be for XM radio, the small red light under the dash sounds like an aftermarket alarm, & the bed bolt problem is probably the clip on the frame that the bolt goes into is probably broken.

The oval thing on your roof is for Sirus, XM Radio. The thing next to the hood release is probably an aftermarket anti theft system. As for the bed I’ll have to look at mine, and get back to you.

Re: Crazy...2011 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 extended cab
'Ah, ha......ONE mystery solved...I feel like Sherlock Holmes.....
I got to reading some threads and then went on to EBay to look at the bed bolts and see how much they cost....After looking at some of the photos of complete sets, I realized that TWO of the bolts were longer than the rest...Two are 6" long and the rest are 4 ⅞"....Then, I realized that IF the fuel pump goes out, that the BED has to be removed....I then wondered if someone had ever removed my bed..I saw several half circles around two or three bold heads, showing that they had been messed with..Could someone have taken the bed off and put one of the longer bolts in a spot that a short bolt should have been??..Then I got out my ground cover cardboard and began crawling around under the truck and examining how long the bolts protruded beyond the nut/clips...WELL, the third bolt I looked at was way too long for the clip...In fact, it was loose... it bottomed out on the bolt shoulder and would not tighten down completely..AH, HA....I pulled out the longer bolt and swapped it for the short one...then, put the longer one in the hole that I originally was trying to fill....IT WENT IN FINE, and threaded in place like it was made to.....WALA....mystery solved...

Re: Crazy...2011 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 extended cab
Yes sounds like someone removed your bed and didn’t pay attention to the bolts being different length. Only three reasons I could think of to remove the bed, bad fuel pump, (not likely on a 2011) the bed was replaced because it was hit, or someone removed the bed to rust proof the frame.
