Default 04 ranger xlt 4.0 transmission questions

I wasnt going to post this, howvee my boss said he had a similar issue on his 96 ram 1500 5.9 before his tranny went

But now to the point, I drove my 04 ranger xlt 4.0 to Vermont and new Hampshire, about 200 miles each way cruising and average of 70 mph, on my way there going through the mountainous hillish areas going up hill the trucks RPMs dove from 3k to 2250 and upon pressing throttle pedal no change in rpms. If I were to let off the pedal and then press it again the rpms would act normal, if I kept my foot still for 3 seconds or so the rpms would dive again and same thing. No responce. If I turn overdrive off it seems to run as expected.

Going from stop, to go, it SEEMS to shift through the gears normally, I believe it's a 5 speed, it's automatic and doesn't shift hard. I was running a tank of 89 octane with fuel injection cleaner, no difference now running 87 octane.

I think what you are saying is it wants to stay in OD and not shift as you depress the pedal ?

I believe they have a 5/OD shift solenoid, I seem to remember my brother's ranger had something like that going on.

I'm sure others will chime in with more info.
