Default 1991 transmission flush or not? Slipping gear

Hello,
I have an ford ranger 1991 automatic transmission. I noticed in the morning that when I put in rear gear, that it takes 2-4 seconds into the gear goes in. So I check the transmission fluid and I refilled 1 quart of a mix transmission fluid. The guy at auto zone says that it works. But I could have taken straight Nercon 5 , but he says it is the same. So every morning when I start the car now, my transmission will not shift or it takes a while before it will do it. I have to drive a mile before that stops. And then I have it too everyday, that the transmission slips the gear out of don't find it for 1 mile or so and then everything is ok. Shall I flush the transmission and get everything out and refill or what do you all think. Thanks for your help.

The only thing you can do to try and save the transmission or get a little longer life out of it maybe and that is a big maybe is to change the fluid and filter.

While you have the pan off of it look for debris stuck to the filter and the bottom of the pan.

When cleaning the pan and gasket surface you cannot get it too clean, make sure to do this job in a clean environment.

If you have a dirty floor and wind gust kicks up dirt that could make your situation worse.

Make sure to have absolutely no lint or debris on the pan or valve body when your done.

If you get the pan off and you find lots of debris in the pan chances are your transmission is toast.

Before you start this job smell the fluid and look at the color. If it dark and smells burnt
You may want to have a back up plan for your transmission in case you have to have it rebuilt or replaced.

Some torque converters have a drain if yours has one it may be helpful to know this in advance.

If you can drain the converter that will get a lot of this old fluid out of the transmission that you couldn't otherwise without doing a flush on top of changing the fluid and filter.

Really what matters is how old the transmission is when and if it has been ever rebuilt, how good it was rebuilt.

If it is the original with many miles and dark burnt fluid in it. I would advise leaving it alone and save your money for a replacement or rebuild.

If you get a replacement make sure to flush out the transmission cooling lines and transmission cooler to get all the old fluid out of the system to avoid contaminating your new transmission
