2004 4.0L Ranger 4x4
Long post... sorry
I've done some searching on here, but get mixed results from what others ran into...
The truck won't turn over. All lights work, and doesn't seem to be the battery.
Back story...
We had issues in the past. First time it acted like this we determined that it was the spare transponder key we had made at Lowes that stopped working. The only working key is the original.
Then my son complained about the turn signals only working intermittently, so I picked up a relay from O'Reilly's. Once I put that in, it wouldn't start (but the turn signals worked). Put the old relay back in and it would start.
I just had the transmission rebuilt 2 weeks ago due to synchro trouble (couldn't get into 2nd gear easily). While they had it, I had them look at the turn signal relay issue. They told me the only relay they could get to work was from Ford.
I drove it from the shop and around town, shifting happily as well as signaling perfectly.
Took it home, and it say for about a week since my son was at college. He came home yesterday, and took it around doing some errands. It worked great, he was thrilled.
Then...
It wouldn't start!
I made the assumption that it could be the relay, or maybe the key itself. We went to the Ford dealer to talk to an adviser. He recommended we jump start it, or pop the clutch. I seriously don't think it's the battery, but tried jump starting to no avail. I am afraid to try popping the clutch because I won't be able to get it back up the driveway if it doesn't work.
He also said to unplug the relay and try starting without it. Didn't help.
I am planning to take it back to my mechanic on Monday, but would appreciate your advice as well.
A little more info
When the key is on, all lights work, radio plays, etc
The key lock light comes on at first but shuts off after a few seconds (pretty sure it's not the key). When I turn the key to engage the starter I do not here much from the drivers seat, but my son says he hears a faint click under the hood.
I see some posts like mine indicated the starter. It just seems odd that it would just fail with no warning. I've seen plenty of starters start going bad, so it was obvious that it finally kicked the bucket.
Anything else I should look at?
Jon

My immediate thoughts are...
Relay
Ignition switch
Starter
