1997 ranger door sensor?
i was given a 1997 ford ranger by my dad and the door dinger (i know thats technical right?) keeps going off unless you unplug a module behind the radio that controls the windshield wipers. my dad never figured out what it was. any ideas would be appreciated.

I'm wondering how you figured out to unplug the windshield wipers...?

Re: 1997 ranger door sensor?
My 97 doom light was staying on because the sensors (switches) in the doors are faulty so I pulled the fuse for it, no more chime as well. You might try that fuse.

Re: 1997 ranger door sensor?
Doesn't the 97 also have the switch in the door latch? If so, would you not be better off just opening up the door and replacing the switch and being done with it? This is a known problem with Rangers and really not that big a deal to fix.
Do some rust proofing as well when you have that door panel open. Two projects done for the price of one.

I did a lot of research on the lock latch switch problem and it seems that the replacement switches are just as faulty as oem. I miss the dome light but not enough to be constantly replacing the switches. I have had the truck 3 1/2 years and put about 19000 miles on it with maybe 15% to 20% in the dark. I have a clip on led light on the passenger's visor for those times when I really need a light. As far as rust goes in or around the door are minor and just above the seam at the very bottom of the door. The first owner took really good care of this truck, other than replacing the a/c condenser I have only had to do routine maintenance.

Having the information to fix the problem properly ...great......but jury rigging it anyway, Priceless!

I would not consider those switches faulty. That is just internet fake news. Nothing lasts forever. I have replaced the driver's side switch once in 151K miles. I have also replaced both wheel bearings, tie rods and ball joints all once too and those were not faulty, just worn out.
Buy the Dorman brand door switch and be done with it and fix the thing right. It most likely will be the last one you ever buy for your truck.

Re: 1997 ranger door sensor?
Someone posted on another truck forum about how to fix the 97 Ranger door sensor.
I read that spraying some Gun Scrubber on the switch can fix the problem.

Works for a while, but the cause of my failure was the plastic tip on the switch was worn down after years of use. If the switch is sticking due to dirt then Gun Scrubber might work, but nothing fixes worn out other then replacing with new.

Shot of wd40 in the latch worked for my '96.

Re: 1997 ranger door sensor?
Can we pull the 'dinger' without disabling anything else? Is it like a relay box i can yank out and toss into the depths of hell?

Re: 1997 ranger door sensor?
Or you could go to a casino in Viet Nam like the above post is suggesting.
You can take the GEM apart and un solder the dinger if you want. Personally the door switch isn't as hard as disassembling your GEM and unsoldering the dinger maybe its just me.

Re: 1997 ranger door sensor?
To disable the dinger.
There is a single wire connector on the ignition cylinder. Cut the wire or yank it out (I did the latter) and no more door ding!

Or if you're feeling really adventurous you can pull the fuse for the dome light/door buzzer and do this....
How-to: OHC install in older Rangers (´96)
