Is This Ranger a good deal?
Hello ,
I am considering buying a Ford ranger .
My brother Noticed this one at a local used car dealership and sent me photos.
I called and they said it only came in a few days ago , its not even on their website yet.
I will be heading over to test drive it in about a half hour.
It is an Automatic 1992 4.0 V6 with 4wd and about 90k on the odometer.
It comes with the Rack back and tool box shown in the photos.
My brother, drove around the car and says it looks like no visible rust.
Sales man on the phone said it was 2,500 right away , I didnt mention it has a sticker for 2,999.
Is that too cheep for a 4WD supercab Ranger ?
Should I be worried?
I am going to check for rust and do the usual fluids check and test drive.

VIN says 93
I don't know as far as actual value goes but $3,000 for a 4x4 Ranger with 90k seems like a good price if everything checks out. Make sure it's not too rusty underneath
As you mentioned I would go through all the fluids and belts and hoses if you buy it

Re: Is This Ranger a good deal?
Five digit odometers back then, so the mileage could be anything (but that doesn't really matter on that one anymore. The two real concerns in the pics are, it looks like the front tires are decambered (alignment and possible need for parts?) and the fact that it's a 24 year old vehicle awaiting a buyer on a used car lot, that says something right there.

2500 is too much for a truck that age. 2 is a fair price. Somethings odd though that he didn't know the year.

I wouldn't touch it. Mom & pop dealerships are just as bad as Craigslist.

Re: Is This Ranger a good deal?
Well I went to see it and I drove it.
It is a 93', they had it written on the sheet incorrectly. It just got to the lot on Thursday.
All the fluids seem OK, but the auto trans fluid is brown. Not dark, but light brown, like somwhat clean oil, but thiner. Didn't notice a smell, but I don't trust my nose lately.
I Had a cold last month and seems like I still get stuffed up or ora runny nose still.
The body is OK. Has two dents on the rear bed corner passenger's side. Rust hole on the underside of the rear driver bed corner. The bed itself has no rust. It's nice nice and clean inside too. No rips in the seats, carpet, or headliner. Has aftermarket Sony radio with Aux and USB inputs, and a detachable face plate. Pictures are below.
Sounds ok when started, Carfax says it had valve cover gaskets replaced in October with new plugs and coolant flush. Wires look to need replacing now. Then i drove it.
It pulls to the right alot while driving. Also, I heard heard a clicking sound when making left turns and for a few seconds after straightening out. It reminds me of the sound a bad CV joint makes. Yes I know it doesn't have one of those. U - joint maybe?
Also I put it into 4wd and went through a small snow bank between parking lots. The rear wheels seamed to slip when they were going through the snow. So, I think there might be a problem there.
I left a deposit and I'm taking it to my mechanic tomorrow around 10am (he happens to be only 2.5 miles down the road) to see what he thinks.

Re: Is This Ranger a good deal?
Looks pretty clean from the pics. What does car fax say about the mileage. Honestly, from the pic of the interior, I would think 90k miles isn't out of the question. In that price range, don't expect to get a perfect vehicle that doesn't need a little work. A few hundred dollars in suspension parts and you might have a decent truck for not too much money. It all depends on what your mechanic finds and how much the dealer is willing to deal with you. Don't be surprised if they come back close to $4k after tax tags and dealer fees though.

Its a $2000-1500 truck. Its going to need at least another g in parts and its old. It doesn't matter if you think its in great shape or not. I sold a 94 with 110k that I had gone through and had a hard time getting 1500 for it. Perfect bed on it. The door had one scrape, rockers were perfect. Everyone kept looking at it shrugging and saying "its old". Go get a deal! You know you can lol

Re: Is This Ranger a good deal?
I did the free history report.
https://www.vehiclehistory.com/pagin...new-report.php
It says it's worth about 2k from the dealer, I am not the best at haggling but I will try
The vehicle history report says, the odometer was 20mi in 1992 and the next time it was registered was 2014 with 61,302 mi. So I don't know for sure , but I would guess it was rolled over once.
I am not kidding myself, I realize it's over 20 years old and will need work. I just want to make sure it is not major mechanical work that will require a big bill at the shop. I would like to be able to fix most of the things myself in my driveway.
Also I had a photo doubled earlier so I fixed that and it shows the dented rear corner photo like I originally intended.

Show up with 1500 in your pocket right pocket. Pull it out. They'll counter have another five in your left and don't pull it out until you get a number you like. Then pay it up LOL. Cash is king. Also, for them to take that in they got it for a score. They're well aware of the questionable mileage, which I'm sure they brought up with the PO. They're well aware of the mechanical issues. Plus the damn thing is OLD. lol
