Default Modified xterra roof rack On Ford Ranger

A couple weeks ago I took a trip to the local Junkyard and seen a Gen 1 Xterra with a fully intact roof rack, so I decided to bring it home for $23 bucks. Haven't seen one installed on a Ranger; I've seen modified Explorer racks, but not Xterra. To mount It I used (M60) Rivnuts and spot welded the nut as well, also had to order 2in plastic plug ends for the rack.

Good looking roof rack modification. What weight do you think it'll hold?...being on the corners looks pretty substantial but prob catch a fair amount of draft.

Really like how you did your bike holder. Got any pics?...how did you fab it ?

OEM load is 125lb, but since its modified idk, I did however use stainless steel rivnuts and welded them as well..I've researched similar Nissan frontier/xterra racks and users have put well over 150lbs, but I don't plan on putting much weight up there; 75lb max. I Plan on using for a bin with extra bike and kayak gear.

The Bike Holder is pretty simple. I cut a couple 8in wood blocks and attached to bedliner and used aluminum sq tubing for crossbar.

The Nissan frontier in some trim packages also came with a similar rack, it was rated at 80lbs or so if my Nissan product training recollects. I know in 2014 there was a reason why they no longer offered it.

And you're going to want to be much more mindful of dynamic loads than static ones. I dont think you'll go wrong with 75-90 lbs in it but try slamming on your brakes, evasive maneuvers, and I would bet those plastic feet could fail at a pretty low weight.

I agree with you. I've stocked the Frontier forums before drilling into my roof, so for what I plan on loading up there i don't think it would be an issue, but like you said "always be mindful", which I agree too.
You say Nissan stopped using those racks? The new Frontier useses a different model with the same plastic feet.

And that is why I hate cutting and pasting my edited comments from my phone.. ughhh

Only the Pro-4X offers that rack, 2014's Nismo Offroad package was similar and according to the Parts dept/Service guys. In order to "add" this rack to a frontier NOT eqpied from the factory was to add about $1200 in parts and have them seem welded into place and was not recommended as an after thought. And this was the Fontana Nissan dealership whose owner and the dealership itself was founded on a race shop and Nissan Performance modification(s).

There GTR tech is the top tech of the Southwest region for Nissan and I've seen the waiting list over 4 months deep. People ship their R32, 33, and some 34's from all over as well as the newer GTR. My point is, these guys in the shop and service are no strangers nor afraid of modified vehicles and they shook their heads no when I tried getting a similar setup for a Rogue that came without the roof rails for a customer, a female surfer who wanted to mount her long board and her I am guessing her standard or speed board (?)..

anyway they said no-uhh-uhhh..
