Unhappy Moderate to severe engine knocking.

I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4cyl. At idle and low speeds (<20 mph) the engine runs completely fine and sounds fine. However at higher speeds or lower speeds at long run times the engine knocks at acceleration. I can keep very slight pressure on the gas pedal and I won't get a knock or if I floor it in small bursts the engine also won't knock. If i'm trying to do any type of normal driving I get a constant knock. A garage looked at the engine and said they couldn't find anything wrong with it mechanically and they called it an "octane ping." They suggested replacing the plugs, wires, MAF, and running a higher octane fuel through it. I replaced all those run 88 through the vehicle and the problem remains. I am going to test the TPS today. Any ides?

Make sure the heat shields on the cat don't have any broken welds, this tends to be an issue with some model rangers. They make a loud rattle during acceleration.

I will give it a check but it definitely sounds like its coming from the engine. Its REALLY loud at its worst and the frequency of the pinging is relative to the RPMs of the engine. Thank you for your comment I will check it out!

I also have a new symptom. The truck stalls on command after a heavy revving of the engine.

Did the garage people hook up anything to see if there were any pending trouble codes? Do you have an automatic or manual trans? How many miles? Has it had regular maintenance? Can you check your oil pressure by any means other than the dash gauge? Carbon build up along with the engine running lean due to a vac leak can produce a good pinging condition, an engine bearing knock usually has a lower tone than a ping and bearing knock is usually constant and can vary in volume with the rpms. Your problem to me sounds more like a ping problem.
