Default 2.5 Turbo and model differences

So, it's been some time since I've been back on the forum. Mostly because I've acquired a few vehicles that were...sad...not Rangers (Grand Cherokee, a couple F350's and...God have mercy on my soul...A Galant).

I'm picking up an '01 Ranger much like RavageRanger (don't ask...can't be worse than my friends Jeep who's named Spankey). What I'm curious about are a few things. I've searched and I haven't found much about the 2.5. I found loads of information about the 2.3t and conversions, but not much about the later model 2.5. I've found information stating that the 2.5 was just a stroked version of the Lima 2.3...if that is the case, would the manifolds, turbo and all bits and pieces work? I plan on dropping some forged pistons in and rebuilding the engine so that won't be a problem. I'll probably PnP the head if I can spare the time to or I may have a machinist do it that I know. Another thing about this swap, is I should be good with my SCT tuner right? It's for my '01 3.No but can have different tunes thrown on it.

One thing I'm curious about is when did the 01's start getting the power dome hood? I'm not a huge fan of the dorky 94+ front end and because of that I'm curious about what front end body panels will interchange. I'm a huge fan of the 04-06 grill, hood and bumpers.

This truck will kind of be a side project while I take some time off work this spring (reserved a vacation, ended up having to cancel) so I'm groovy with things taking time. I did search, but most threads are from back when I was a pretty active member. So no flaming please.

There is alot of info on turbo ranger forums, but you get a 2.3 crank so you can run the forged internals. Stock 2.5 can't handle the boost and there isn't any aftermarket support for the 2.5 that I know of that would allow you to run any meaningful boost.

From what I've been told, the 2.5's have the same forged rods as the 2.3t's and all things considered, the 2.3t's pistons should fit without much if any modification. With that being said, I was more concerned about the externals of the build such as turbo manifolds, and things like that. I also wanted to know if there's many fitment issues. I understand that in most 2.3t swaps, you have to eliminate the a.c. and modify/remove the heater box. I guess what I'm curious about is if anyone is aware of someone completing this swap. A lot of people have done like any other swap...they start it, and then fall off the face of the earth. I've seen video's on Youtube of people running 2.5 turbo's on low boost...but those videos are pretty old and the OP are as a result unresponsive.

I've truthfully just thought about dropping a 4L in it, but as with any actual engine transplant. It's not really worth the time. I'm not a huge fan of the 4.6/5.0 V8 swap either. I've always like the thought of a turbo 4 pot...it's different. I'm picking the truck up this weekend and if possible, a turbo coupe engine from a buddy also.

I believe some have ran the svo manifold with some adapters that move it forward to clear the AC. If your not a member over there, id register there. Better chances of finding someone who has experience with the 2.5.

Thanks. I think I'll check it out. The forum has all but died since I was a member. I'm still going to actively search and stay as a member but I think you're right. Also, someone may want to pass onto the mods that the site is having some navigation issues. Any time I try to access the page directly, it takes me somewhere else completely unrelated.

Though as a side note, I did do a little bit of research off of a random thread I found and it appears that the 2000+ body styles were a bag of wtf's. Some 01's like mine got the power dome hood, and some didn't. Some got the newer grill style in 01'.5, and others didn't. I guess I'll see if I can scavenge an 04 front clip and see what I can do about that. I believe someone on Youtube who had a 95 with a 4bt swapped actually swapped a 07 front clip and literally everything matched up without any body work other than painting to match.

You can switch between years from 98 up. 3rd gens are a bit more work but can also be uprgaded to whatever year. No problems there.
