Default 1995 ranger rear end swap questions

Hey I have a 1995 ranger with a 2.3 and a 5spd. It's beamed on kings up front and on Deaver G50s in the rear. The stock rear end has 3.73 gears and the trucks on 33"s. I'm thinking I wanna do a half ton 9" out of a bronco but I'd like to know what's all involved in the swap and what gear ratio I should go with? if anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it.

I would go with 4.88, that would put you at 2,350 rpm in 5th gear at 60 mph. 4.56 would work but I think 4.88 would be better.

I'm not sure, but I'd assume you'd need to weld on new spring perches, maybe shock mounts, maybe an adapter u joint, maybe a driveshaft depending on how everything falls into place but I doubt you'll need a driveshaft. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will chime in.

Take your new(er) tire ratio, divide by old tire ratio, multiply by stock gears, and that's your ratio to run the new(er) tires as if it were stock.

I.G. 35/27.5 = 1.27 x 4.10 = 5.218, So a 5.13would be the closest. Take for example 35/27.5 = 1.27 x 3.73 = 4.74, so 4.88 gears would be the better choice.

I know a couple Toyota guys who stuffed desperately 35's and are under-geared but they already spent a wad on new gears.. figure out what you think you will use and go with the right gear and pinion for your needs. Otherwise you start turning into Trans issues, some heavier engine wear, suspension issues, and of course more weight. The use of a 1/2 ton may add unnecessary weight to lug around, and if your using it for a desert runner may change the balance of your trucks flight pattern off of dunes where you could take an explorer rear end, gusset it and beef it up and the costs, installation, maintenance, and repairs are more budget friendly..

This is a popular topic so I'm sure plenty of others will chime in with like advice and experiences to add.

Never been a fan of g50s. Way to stiff lol but anyways I would advise 4.88s if you're going to stick with the 33s but if you plan to go to 35s I would definitely go 5.13 or maybe even 5.29. As far as the axle swap goes your best bet would be to just get it under the truck and then get a custom driveshaft made for the right length and correct yoke on each end. Probably cheaper than swapping the yoke on the differential and my guess is that a full size in stock location would require a shorter driveshaft. That being said if I was you and I wanted to put the full size axle in the then I would get a set of the Chevy 64" leafs and some link killer brackets and make the new axle spring under. Then you can choose where you want the axle. Then the driveshaft won't need to be shortened. Just the yoke swapped out for whatever is on your new axle

Do some research on dezert rangers, plenty of guys have run this swap before. As far as gearing, if it's a street truck I'd do 4.56, if a little bit of both 4.88, and pure desert then 5.13. All depends on your application
