I will have to go to my spreadsheet, but I think over 4 years of ownership I have averaged around 19.5mpg total. (Actually I have to re-create the spread sheet as it went my my hard drive failed.) But I really don't give a shit if someone passes me, or beats me off the line, it's just a truck to me, not a race car. It would be better if I did more highway driving, but coming to work I get on the highway, I get off 2 exits later.

Anything will get broken into if your stuff is visible. And statistically speaking, newer fancier rides will get it more. Thieves don't target old Rangers, they will pass it by for the BMW in the next row unless they can see something inside the Ranger. Smashing a Tacoma window is just as easy as smashing a Ranger window.

Pretty much how it works when parked in public or when the public can get to your ride. Thieves don't items in cars based on it being American, Korean, krautanese or JAP, it's the value and ease of selling thevaluable in plain view or what they saw an owner put in the trunk (happens a lot here at trail heads) that appeals most. Alarms don't matter much either, smash-grab-run is no problem and with all of the car alarms making so much noise over the last 35+ years, most of us give them no more attention than children at play. Reality of it all, if someone doesn't want to lose something, don't leave it in your car, plain and simple, and pure common sense.

Edit: "Good neighborhoods" don't assure people don't break into vehicles but rather, they just imply that there's more likely something in there to steal and a place worthy of shopping. This as opposed to a car in crapville where everyones broke and driving wrecks. Theres something to be said about park and rides too, like, they tend to be "stores without cashiers" for some people.

As soon as you put bigger tires or lift it, your mpg will drop retarded low for a Ranger
What base might this be?

Well, have you seen the back windows on a 95? they're the ones that split in the middle, and it was just stupid easy for them to pry it. If they had broken it, that is a different story to me. I think the part of me that wants a newer one is the fact that it will have a/c, power locks, and other amenities. I have 2 cars, and I barely drive one and id like to sell them both and get something newer and more reliable. I don't trust my 95 somedays... But I don't know what the best years of rangers are. I want a 4.0 4x4 5 speed ext. cab. but I don't know what years, or which engine is better than the other. I think a Ranger would fit my budget the best at the moment.

What do you want to do with the truck? If you want some power, don't care much about mpg, the 4.0 SOHC is the best. 3.0 is a decent motor but underpowered. I had a 2.5, thing was fucking bullet proof.

The 3.0 is a great motor, but my 3.0 seems to have lost its "spunk" recently and now it's struggling on the highway and around town. The motor is dogging and the mpg have dropped. It's hard to go over 75 on the highway. And the mpg of the 4.0 is the same as my other car, and if it has the power do do things like pull a trailer and things like that, then I can live with the mpg. I can't have a 4 cyl, because I already haul too much with my 3.0. Lumber for work, firewood, etc. And the 3.0 was struggling.

Well, with the 4.0 SOHC, I was looking at '07 ratings, as I have an '07. with an auto you would be rated at roughly 5700lbs, a 5 speed is rated at 3200lbs. Personally I think they only difference between the 2 configurations is the lower rating gave Ford a fallback to deny warranty claims for new clutches is the owner didn't know how to drive!

Is it really rated that much different?

When was the last time the plugs and wires were replaced? Mine was lacking power and had a slight miss at idle. Put in a set of brand new motorcraft plugs and wires and it made a world of difference.

Yep. I don't think they are less capable at all though. I think it was just for Fords protection.

I bought my little 98xcab stepside 4.0 automatic needing a new tranny (reverse was out) and I paid $1600. When I got ready to buy a truck, I wanted a Ranger specifically because it was smaller than an F series truck. There were a few non negotiable things I had to have....Power windows/locks, xcab, 4x4, 4.0 I ended up having to have an automatic as my 16 year old daughter will be driving it. I got really lucky as I was searching up to 500 miles away from home, I found mine 3 miles away in the end. The only thing I didn't get that I wanted was the Sonic Blue color.

I think the Xcab makes a huge difference, even though it isn't that much space. I did have to suffer with not having but two doors which makes the xcab harder to access but still having a little more space to put stuff in. The best thing you can do to protect what you have is simply tint the windows as dark as you can take but not so dark it draws attention of law enforcement. I am lucky enough to have a Private Investigator license which allows me to be exempt from window tint laws. That hides all your stuff quite well from prying eyes.

Plugs, wires, and coil pack were all done less than 5k miles ago. As well as fuel filter, all new wheel bearings, new rear diff fluid, and mobil 1 full synthetic oil changes every 5k since I've had it.

My little Regular cab is such a pain in the ass. I can fit myself and my backpack in it, and then if my girlfriend comes in, we are STUFFED. I wish I could do a cab swap.

Brad: I feel same about getting something in back seat with extended cab. I wonder if bucket seats would help. Anybody replaced 60/40 front seat with bucket seats for better access? Did it work?

Cab swap ain't likely to happen. Extra cab has a longer wheel base for the extra cab to fit in. I've thought about something a little opposite; Taking a reg cab/bed and placing it onto the longer frame and then making a locker like box to fill in the void, opens from both sides for extra storage.

I'm 6'2 and Ive slept in the cab of my manual reg cab before. It's tight but you do what you have to do sometimes.
