Default Buying Oil Online

Looking to do a full service on my '04 Ranger FX4 Level II. Part of this service will include new fluids in EVERYTHING (engine, transmission, transfer case, both diffs, power steering, and brake system). I've found what kind/grade of oils and the quantity I need, now I'm just trying to find out where the cheapest place to buy these supplies online are. Summit has Lucas products cheaper than the generic stuff my local O'Reilly's has, so I figured why not buy quality stuff to put in it. The real question will be the shipping costs to see if it works out any better than buying quality lubes at my local shop. What places does you the collective know of for getting good oil online cheap?

Amazon is the cheapest I have ever found. Sometimes you can use Advance Auto's 30% coupon for online orders and then pick whatever up in the store for a good deal. (Why you can't use that same coupon in-store I have no idea).

There are millions of posts that point out Walmart sells Motorcraft filters and all types of oil dirt cheap.

You can get a Motorcraft filter for less than $4 and 5 quarts of mobile 1 for $25-28 at walmart

I'm sure this guy knows that Walmart exists. He's asking about ONLINE sales.

I've been cross shopping Amazon, Summit, and O'Reilly's so far and Summit is the cheapest. For the engine oil and filter I'll probably grab some common quality oil (Castrol, Mobil 1, etc) and a filter cheap from Walmart (no I hadn't forgotten them and their cheapness) unless an online supplier has a better price (including shipping). But it's also about the gear lube and ATF (which can be ran in the transmission, transfer case, and power steering system) which I doubt Walmart will carry the like of Lucas or Redline at as low of cost (I want to run high quality lube in the long service interval components). And like I've said, if an online supplier has it all at a better rate I'll go that route. I'm not doing this right away, hopefully in a few weeks. Just trying to get all the stuff together for the service.

If you can buy the items cheaper locally, there is no point in buying online and paying shipping.
Gas is $2.15 a gallon here but oil keeps going up and up.....I will never understand that.

But I don't know that I can is the thing. I don't have a Walmart or any of the regular auto stores local to me (besides around here they rarely carry much beyond the basic cheap oils and when they do have Lucas etc it's pretty dear). So since I'd have to plan a trip to go and get the stuff it's worth it to me to try cross shopping online. Which I need to know where to look for the best deals to do. So once more I'll ask, where is the best place to buy high quality oils/lube online that you all know of?

Most competent people know how to shop for and buy good oil for a fair price both locally and online, it's really not overly difficult. If you believe that this Lucas is greater than God, sex, food, and ivory back scratchers, including it being superior to the quality oils that the "scum" use in their vehicles, then stop whining so much; instead, shop, pull out the plastic, pay the price and be done with it. Simple. It really seems like the underlying purpose of this thread is geared at trying to portray false superiority of oneself for telling 99.xx% of the people that the lubs they use are total shit rather than buying something at a fair price and moving on with life.

Auto parts stores are very high on oil prices....$10 more expensive than Walmart for a 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 EP. $2 more expensive for a oil filter.
There is a damn Walmart every 5 miles where I live.
Ebay isn't a bargain either. Try Rock Auto because they are reasonable on shipping.
Lucas oil is no better than Mobil 1, Pennzoil Platinum, or Royal Purple.

Not sure where/why you developed that impression, but instead of being insulted I'm going to attempt to respond constructively (something I wish you might have tried first). I'm not a boutique oils guy, I typically go cheap to midrange oil in most my stuff. I stated earlier I'll likely go with regular ol' Mobil 1, Castrol etc for the motor, but I wanted to try putting in some high quality fluids into the other drive train components IF I could get a good deal on them (because I saw Summit had Lucas gear oil for half the nearest O'Reilly's). Before starting this thread I tried googling for awhile to see what online retailers were out there that sold and shipped oil cheaply. Maybe it was my phrasing of m search topics, but I didn't find anything like what I was looking for. I remembered reading on this forum in some thread where a couple of guys were suggesting various online oil retailers that had really good prices and shipping, but not being able to find it again I thought I'd start this thread to ask the simple question that might bring up this websites or better ones as answers.

What you and others are doing isn't conducive to answering that question. It'd be as if you asked some questions about a vehicle and a dealership not near you to see if it would be a better deal than getting a technically inferior (but not bad, unusable, or undesirable by ANY means) from a local dealership, and I barged in and kept telling you just pay more and buy a local Chevy. Not helpful in any way.

I don't believe using Lucas makes me better in any way and NEVER once did I say or imply any such thing as conventional brand oil users are scum. But I've heard plenty of people say they thought that using Lucas and Royal Purple products (and some of the other top brands I've never really found necessary to fork out the money for) made their transmission and transfer case shift easier/smoother and ran cooler than on Mercon V, that the power steering pumps ran more quietly, etc. Just thought I'd give it a go myself IF I could find a good deal online (not going to find such a good deal at the local ish shops so I'd just stick with the conventional brands if I went there, which as I've said aren't exactly around the corner). I've never really bought higher end oils online or off and am trying to ask those people here who as you have said DO know how where they go.

I don't see where or why you've apparently taken offense at this, but can we please stay to the point of this thread? Thank you.

No such luck out here in the boondocks, Wally world and O'Reilly's is over an hour away. Though you're right Walmart is generally much cheaper on oil and filters. As you said eBay and Amazon (except maybe for prime members) aren't that great of deals, so they're about ruled out. Forgot about Rock Auto, so thanks.

And I'm not assuming Lucas is better than any of those brands, it's just the example I've chosen to list (partially because it was their brand diff fluid I saw so cheap on summit, and again this much more about the diff oil and tranny fluid than motor oil (which will probably keep receiving Castrol GTX)).

It's been over a year since I've been to a Walmart (been out of country) and I don't recall my "local" one ever carrying much beyond motor oil and filters (again I'm really after higher end diff oil and ATF if I can find it at a good price more so than motor oil).

Actually, it's the condescending tone and choice of words in nearly every post that finally broke the ice, and it continued right on to and up through deleting a valid sentence in post #10. As for help, I did give you useful advice as did others, but it seems to go unnoticed and/or, excuses are made. Due to the incessant use of the word "cheap", "low of cost" and it's likes, and not finding the product from the fountain of youth priced as such, maybe it's because..................it's either out of your price range (I was nice and didn't say that in my last post) or the price you feel it should sell for is below the cost to bring the product to market.

I could and would be happy to suggest where one can get a good product at a competitive price, then you can do your homework, read, study, learn and make a decision. And I swear, on a sound engine you can run it 7,500 miles and it won't blow up or develop a problem due to using the "generic stuff", the "common quality oil (Castrol, Mobil 1, etc)", and a filter cheap from Walmart" (it's called, Motorcraft) or as an alternative to that, a WIX or a rebadged WIX at NAPA. Unfortuantly, the meat will probably be ignored and the response will probably again be along the lines of, "Not helpful in any way", as it doesn't clearly state where to buy lucas products for Supertech and Raylube prices. It's almost like you're looking for a website called crazycheapoil.com that sells this lucas for $1.29/quart, FREE SHIPPING included. Good luck.

I've not once meant a condescending tone or word, I can't help how others interpret what I've posted but it was only meant level honest inquiries and responses. I've said cheap and low cost because that's what $3 Castrol, Pennzoil, and O'Reilly's house brand oils are compared to $8-9 oils, I personally don't see that an insult or negative mark. And as I've mentioned before, I have up until now exclusively used such oils and never before higher cost ones (and just like you I can confirm they won't cause servere component failure) but I want to try the higher end stuff in my drive line (but again probably not the motor) just to see if it is all it's cracked up to be (surely that's not a sin is it).

Post 10 wasn't mine. I did edit post 11 this morning because I've been typing this all from my phone and I didn't catch a few skipped words and errors I made late last night.

And maybe I missed your helpful post, but the only one I've seen before this last one just says that plenty of competent people can buy oil online and offline and I should stop whining pull out the plastic and buy something already. None of which was particularly helpful. You say you have some good places you could point me, I'm earnestly wanting to here them (no snark, condescension, or other BS implied) if you would.

I'm not expecting or looking for Lucas, Royal Purple, etc for O'Reilly's house brand $1.29/qt prices. I wouldn't mind getting some Lucas diff oil for the $11 a liter they've got it listed for on Summit (that's a damn fine price as far as I concerned seeing that O'Reilly's lists it on their site for $20ish. When $11/L locally gets me basic Pennzoil, why not do some research and see what good deals might be online (especially since I'm in no rush).

I hope I addressed all the 'meat' and explained myself and my intentions well enough that we can end our pissing match and turn this thread into something that's educational for both myself and other users who'd like a solid list of places to look for good deals on lube for their Rangers. So what do you say, care to share the sites for good oil buys with myself and the world?

List So Far
rockauto.com
summitracing.com (low cost, higher shipping)
amazom.com (below auto parts store cost plus shipping)

Keep a look out for those local deals.

NAPA has local sales every few months on their synthetic oil for $2.99 a quart. On the last batch I bought, I believe somewhere on the NAPA bottle it said made by Valvoline.

Menards also had Pennzoil full syn for 2.99 a quart and then had another rebate on top of that making it slightly less. They had 2.99/qt deal about 3 times last year.

Advance auto also has a $40 off $100 coupon code and a perks program. Sometimes the coupon codes don't apply to things like oil. The perks program applies to everything. Most of the time, for car parts anyway, Advance with codes will have better prices than the exact same brand name part at rockauto because of rockauto's shipping.

Amazon doesn't seem to state if your seller is a US seller or not. Have to be careful. I bought a mower part from a non-US seller and it took 3 weeks to arrive.

Just gonna put it out there for you, I would never consider Mobile 1 cheap, run of the mill etc. It is every bit as good as anything you will find labeled 'premium'. I pick mine up at CostCo when I see it on sale. Usually buy 4 cases and we will change the oil in all of the vehicles. Oil for the bikes I have sourced locally, but next time I may buy that on line.
