90's Ranger MPG Ratings
Hi everyone i actually sold my Ranger in September and now I'm looking for another one. I'm having ranger withdrawals. Anyways I was looking at the 90's 4x4 Rangers with the 3.0 and stick shifts and noticed that they're rated at 17city/22highway from 1993-1996 but starting in 1997 and on through the 2000s they are only rated at 15city/20highway. So my question is, was there a mechanical change that occurred after 1996 that caused the rating change or was it something else? I just thought I'd ask on here I've always gotten good info here in the past. Thanks in advance!
Regards,
Alex

Re: 90's Ranger MPG Ratings
possibly a change in how they tested for MPG ratings. there's been many small updates over the years to the engine, gearing, driveline, and suspension that could slightly affect MPG ratings, but you can pretty much count on getting 15-22 MPG with any 3.0 ranger, lol.

Re: 90's Ranger MPG Ratings
Yeah I thought that's probably the reason, I just thought I'd see if anyone knew if it were because of a maybe a different rear end ratio or something like that.

In 2008 the EPA started rating fuel economy with more real world tests, but their ratings are still way too over optimistic.

Yeah I thought it might have something to do with that but I wasn't aware of any kind of ratings revision in 1997. I just thought maybe there was another factor. The compression ratio on that engine didn't change and neither did the rear end gear ratio at least according to kbb specs.

Re: 90's Ranger MPG Ratings
Actually I just had a thought, I know a lot of cars were made to use flex fuel in the late 90s which included lower compression ratios, could that be the case as to why the mpg ratings went down in 97? Does anyone know if ford went to flex fuel engines on the ranger? I know the s10 did but I can't remember seeing a flex fuel ranger from the 90s. Thanks in advance!

Re: 90's Ranger MPG Ratings
I know in 98 that had some slight redesigns, Not sure exactly what, but I know body style changed a small bit, and suspension changed as well. I'm sure they also had to re test for fuel economy, since they don't test each year, they only retest with a redesign, and The tests get a bit stricter every few years.

the 3.0 ranger became flex fuel capable in 2000. I don't think they lowered the compression ratio to make it work, they just added hardened valve seats and some different sensors in the fuel system to ajust air / fuel ratios better.

While that's true, the mileage drop that I'm seeing happened in 97 so it didn't correlate with the redesign in 98.
