Default Re: 4x4 vs 2wd

Depends on your area man. Majority of snow we get here in VA/DC area is not long lived. My truck is rwd. Wife's solara is fwd, my STi is awd, and the Merc is rwd.... Never had an issue with any of them ever.

Do you NEED a 4x4? We get snow less for about a month, after that it's fine. I see tons of bmw's and mercs on the side of the road because they are still running summer tires but that's not the fault of the car at all.

My friend has dedicated winter tires for his m5 and he has zero issues in snow. It's actually quite fun to ride with him when we do get snow.

I like the mpg I get from the little 4 banger and rwd of the ranger. I've never needed a 4x4 truck yet... if the time comes then cool, but I have other people I could ask if I needed a larger 4x4.

Like others have mentioned you are asking this on a forum where the majority of people will say 4x4 no matter what. Which is cool but if you don't need it why pay more and get shittier mileage.

All depends. All our Coupes & Convertibles run Summer Performance tires. These would have a hard time getting out of the driveway let alone the subdivision.

All the trucks are 4X4 Ranger AT2, Expedition ATR & CX5GT LTX. Have had no issues or OH S**T moments with any of them in the snow going back to the Ranger we bought new in 1998.

Default Re: 4x4 vs 2wd

I've been driving 2WD pickups since my 1971 F-100, and have been in Wisconsin for the last 20 years. Last winter I had 6 sandbags in the back of my Dakota and did my best to just point it down the road and hope for the best. Last November I got a 2010 4WD Ranger Sport. This winter it's been great on roads that are icy, snow packed and hazardous. My 30 mi one way commute is rural on county roads. Taking it slow in 4WD with the 5 speed transmission I just feel safer when it's really sloppy out. If you have to get to work and back on bad winter roads, you can do it with 2WD, but 4WD is well worth it IMHO.

I'm in snow country, have done (very mild) offroading and driven some absolutely brutal dirt and gravel. 2wd has always been enough.

2wd advantages:
-better gas mileage
-slightly lower purchase price
-better ride quality (this is reduced significantly if you have the misfortune of buying the rare torsion bar RWDs)
-lower long-term repair/maintenance costs
-better handling and acceleration in all but the most slippery conditions
-better braking everywhere

The only real advantages to a 4x4 are that you have it if you put yourself in situations where you need it (sounds like you probably never will), and slightly better off-the-line acceleration in very slippery conditions where you probably shouldn't be going that fast anyway.

I've driven many Torsion bar Rangers and Explorers as well as coil spring Rangers. On a stock setup they have identical "ride quality" if you ask me.

Compared to driving an F750 with a full load of concrete or a bobcat, and especially a coil spring Ranger with spacers and/or lift coils, those ride like shopping carts compared to a stock torsion bar Ranger with decent shocks.

They are all vanilla.

Same thing I've found after just short of 13 years with a RWD Tbar truck.

Yeah. Me and my ex girlfriend used to smash hard in that poor Sport Trac of hers. With blown shocks it rides fine lol.

You're telling me. Second motor and third transmission. And just the other day it started pissing tranny fluid out of the bellhousing.

All depends on use whether off road or not. Trophy Trucks are the highest class of off-road racing vehicles. Designed with the sole purpose of moving as fast as possible over off-road terrain.. you WONT find anyone winning in a 4x4 there.

Purposely burying a 4x4 in mud to say you went "wheel'N" isn't off-roading either. IMO

1. Low range.
2. Weight over front wheels meaning better traction.
3. Power distributed over more wheels, meaning less power per wheel is required to move the vehicle.

Anyone who actually goes offroad or "wheeling" as the posers call it will tell you the following:

1. Good rubber and a suspension lift are way more important than 4x4 or lockers.
2. Off roading is 70% driver, 30% rig.
3. Every rig has limits.
4. The harder the trail you can take, the more screwed you are if you get stuck.

Sure a 2wd with locker engaged will not turn quite as well, but its not the impossible task you're describing either. It all depends on what you're doing and how its set up.

Yes of course its more sensible to buy a 4x4 if you can get one, but what if you can't? What if 2wd rangers are significantly cheaper and more plentiful? Under those circumstances, a 2wd with some mods will be more than adequate for what the op wants to do: light off road and occasional snow.
5). THE driver - Driver error/skill set can account for a lot

Hence, 4.0L, manual trans, 2WD, No snorkel, 2" lift, 2" body lift, 3.73 open diff, sitting on 33's.. 70 yards of 28" deep slow moving water (most of the way, it gets deeper..) My well equipped, lifted, 4x4, auto, Toyota 4Runner overlanding partner didn't make it 25 yards in and we ALL know of the bragging rights Toy and Yota owners like to claim and bask in their own light... -1 Toyota

6). 4x4 will not help you to STOP in snow, gravel, mud, ice, or on slick rock

I think the argument here has become one of whose more capable according to stock or modified, their conditions and environments. Lets face it we can change all the variables to fit the arguments, myself included.

Those of us arguing one point may be valid in the conditions set before them because they are rock crawling, sand, mudding, or just two-tracking it down some fire trails/back roads.

On a road.. most def not. But isn't the argument circling around purpose here??

I think some of those answering the OP initial comment took careful note of the OP intentions, purposes, and demographics into consideration.

I do like how everyone does focus on multiple commentary with one objection and stands behind it as if they were behind an engine block/car during a shoot out as if the shooter couldn't maneuver around the vehicle [with facts or evidence to validate other items].. lol

I'm making a point that they aren't the highest class of off-road racing vehicle. Regardless, I consider my truck to be like a Swiss army knife. While I don't usually need 4wd, when I have needed it, it's been great to have. I would not consider a truck without it.

James you've met the crazy bitch. I've shared the stories many times while I was swaggering drunk.
