Unhappy Clutch Fan....Please help my stupidity

How do you tighten your clutch fan. Im not using specific tools. I have a 1999 2.5L mfi 4cyl 5spd manual transmission. There was no nut for the fan just four bolts around it. I got it off fine but i am unsure how tight and how to tighten it. Ive never worked on a vehicle before and just pulled the thing off cause someone told me if i dont replace it my engine will blow. Please help i got this thing at over 300000 miles and just trying to keep it alive. Ive got bills to pay/ need to get to work.

I'm a old fart and not sure I remember but, seems like I had to change one out on the wife's Dodge Rebel, 340 V8 and it boogied. Anyway, I think I took a piece of wood, and levered it into the fan blades so I could hold the fan and tighten the bolts. You should be able to get the torque value from someone that has a Chilton or factory manual. Caution, tightened the bolts as a group, little on this one, same amount on that one etc. Till you get it down to where you have to think about torque values. Think since I was a farm boy, I tightened them as tight as I could with a 3/8 rachet. Hope this helps.

Did you just change the fan blade or the fan blade and clutch? It's the clutch that mostly needs the changing. Unless the fan is broken or brittle, there is no need to change it, just the clutch part. The clutch part is what determines how fast your fan blade will spin, When it wears out, it usually won't spin enough to properly cool the engine. I suspect that is what someone was referring to when they told you to change it.

If it's the same concept as the 4.0, then there's a tool (looks like a two pronged fork) that fits on the pulley bolts on the water pump and stops that pulley from turning when the hex shaft of the clutch is being tightened. The water pump pulley tool kit is a "free" rental at Oreillys and probably other parts stores.

Thanks didn't know that. Didn't have it when I changed the one that Rebel 40 years ago.
