I taught myself with a repair manual as a companion. Saving money was my motivator. That and getting piss poor repair results from shops I paid my hard earned money to. I have little faith in most repair places. Good ones are rare. Good ones that won't rape you are even rarer.

I noticed his truck when I was walking in and it was a 2001 V6 3.0L Edge. Pretty similar to mine so I said I'd have a look for him. First thing I did was check the coolant, and of course there was none in the reservoir. I told him what was wrong and he had no idea what coolant even was. So I told him to keep his truck running to open the thermostat and we poured some in. It took 10 qts. before the reservoir stayed full, the thing only has a capacity of 13!!!! I opened the hood of my truck to put my new PCV valve in and while looking at the two engines felt a little proud of my recently tuned-up and clean engine compared to his dirt-covered and obviously in need of a tune-up engine. But man, are all people really that oblivious?
I dont' claim to be a car/truck guru but I'm not ignorant to car problems. I have my guesses some times, and if I"m really not sure I'll take it in. but it seems that most young people in todays society unless they're the car buffs or what not, really have no clue.

For example, one morning I was coming home from my PT job, when I guy was pulled over. Thought maybe he had a flat b/c he was sitting on the curb. But it turns out his exhaust pipe was dragging. He asked me if it'd be okay until he got home, (Me of course thinking NO!). So I had a look under car. Now mind you, I was wearing a good sports jersey which I really had no desire to get dirty. Turns out the rubber bushings/clips, whatever they are, had dry rotted and fell off making his pipe drag.
I happen to have nylon straps from my newspaper bundles. So I got a couple together and rigged it so the pipe was up off the ground. Fortunately he was headed home less then a mile away.
But at least he seemed appreciative.

Agreed. I've lived where I live now for 5 years and have yet to find a place I'm satisfied with. My prior repair shop is too far to drive b/c of dropping off and picking reasons. Plus the mechanic that worked on my car was a trustworthy friend of mine.

It happens, some people know cars, and others don't... I find it laughable to see someone complaining that they don't have enough "blinker fluid" to get home! xD

Anyway, to second Ranger101 and bassplayer92517's comments; I'm only 18, I started working on my truck when I was 16. When I began I was pretty unknowing when it came to the mechanics of a car. However, I was interested so I took up the time and learned everything that I know myself. It really has made me know how to be one with my car, and has taught me how to treat it responsibly! (:

I find with a good nuymber of the kids these days (not all but most), if it aint in a video game or on facebook, they dont have much of a clue. I work with a ton of youger guys (18 to 25) and it kills me that they dont have a clue about much other than beer and girls.
