Default 4WD engine/trans opinions

What should I look for in the 93-01 4wds? Looking to buy a used Ranger and really not familiar with th 3.0 and 4.0. Auto or manual? how about mpg and durability? i would like to have a good idea what i'm looking at/for! Thanks for any feedback ...mike

If you can afford the extra initial cost, get the 4.0 engine. The 3.0 is very reliable and does the job adequately, but the 4.0 is much more of a performer.

in a 4wd, the 4.0 is a must IMO, especially if you do any towing, and if you can find one in your price range find an 01 because it will have the SOHC 4.0 instead of the OHV 4.0, it makes about 50 more horsepower and is slightly more efficient but both are great motors. as far as transmissions go it depends on what you will use the truck for, if you do any towing i suggest the auto, its stronger than the manual but if it will just be a daily driver and you enjoy driving a stick get the manual. it will net you a little better MPG's but like i already said, the manuals are weaker than the autos and are known for having clutch issues although i never had any issues with the manual trans i had in my 93.

Thanks for your opinions guys ! i wasn't sure which was the better engine. i saw a 4wd w/ a 4cyl in it and pretty much ruled that out. A
lot of ads say V6 .Is there marking on either the 3.0 or 4.0 when you
open the hood like on the valve cover? Are they easy to tell apart? Thanks for the info!

AFAIK, there was never a 4-cyl/4WD Ranger. The 4.0's will have a big plastic cover right up front that says 4.0L SOHC. The 3.0 will say 3.0L V6 on the passenger side cylinder bank right next to the coil pack.

Also, the difference in gas mileage between the 3.0 and the SOHC 4.0 is 1-2 miles per gallon.

I drive an 02 4.0 auto 4x4 as a daily driver. Roughly 80 miles round trip per day, and get on average 20 mpg. I don't drive it hard, but occasionally need the get up and go for passing. If you're hard on the skinny, you can count on crappy mileage. I've only had it in the mud once or twice, and have NO complaints what so ever. Routine maint. is a must in my book, and I've never had any issues with reliability. Good luck with your purcahse.
