yea just like matt said it can happen with any car. The rangers i've had have always been great, they have been the best and most durable trucks i've ever owned. but at the same time i've talked to people that say that they hate them and have never had anything but problems with them. Looks like maybe you got a cursed one.

I bought a '97 4cyl from a co-worker. Truck has 131,000 miles on it. He said the slave cyl is going out. The heater control that you use to choose how hot or cold you want, doesn't work. The windshield washer doesn't work, the AC needs charged, and it needs front shocks and could use new tires in the next 5,000 miles. Engine runs great, power steering is fine, radio works fine.
All that for $500. You can see pics in the photo gallery under "I got my truck yesterday"
Here is what I've found out, what I've done, and what's on my to do list.
I think the slave cyl is fine. The bracket that holds the brake and clutch pedal is wearing, causing slop and not depressing the clutch rod as far as it should. I ordered a brand new bracket for $66 shipped, that has both the clutch and brake pedals and bracket. I have improved shifting temporarily by placing an e-clip on the pin the clutch rod attaches to in order to limit side to side movement. So far, no grinding when shifting into first or reverse. Bracket should make it shift excellent.
Washed, waxed and vacuumed. Painted wiper arms.
Ordered a brand new PAIR of headlight assemblies (stock style) including bulbs for $41 shipped, off ebay.
Found a cheap fix for heater control here on the internet... haven't done it yet.
Looking at getting a set of shocks for around $50 at Autozone. Going to re-charge the AC and use some that has dye to see if I can spot a leak.

Buying a used vehicle is what you make of it. Google solutions for the problems you have, do as much of the work yourself as you can. If there is a member on this site that lives close to you, maybe they can physically help you out on some stuff a lot cheaper than a repair shop can. Remember there are more places on the net to find answers if you can't find them on here.

What is wrong with your truck?

i bought a 1997 ford ranger 3.0 v6 auto trans 123346 miles on it due to my impulsive behavior for 1050 usd. no ac, shifter overdrive button is broken, body is full of bondo and primer, not shifting properly which turns out to be the transmission is shot, and the tires/rims are ugly and i just found on vehicle history report that the truck has a mileage of 126600 back in 2000, i want to smack my head a hundred times

more problems on the truck surfaced when i took it home, seller told me that the shifter is just not lining up properly, so i went to ford and bought a new shifter indicator and and a new shifter handle, did not fix the problem and turns out its the transmission, paid 800 to rebuilt it, then i notice the shocks in the front are not working anymore, then i start rebuilding the ac and yesterday, put more troubles on mine the alternator gave out, got stuck in the middle of the highway for 1 hour i mean what else would go bad on this truck,

Ryan,
Sorry to hear of the raw deal you got. Remember, karma's a bitch, so that seller will get what's coming to him eventually.
Luckily, I work with some pretty good people, and I told my co-worker about the bracket, and he said he hoped that the new bracket fixes the problem. A lot of people would be pissed that they sold a good running vehicle that only needed a $66 part instead of a $600 to $700 repair. (That's the price I got from a mechanic to do the slave... thank God I don't need it)
I wonder how much it would be to find a body to replace the one on your frame? Might be able to find a deal on Craigslist if someone is trying to scrap a truck with a blown motor. Either transplant the drivetrain, or swap bodies.
Was your title marked as "actual miles"? If so, you might have legal recourse if the seller told you the mileage was accurate. http://www.odometertampering.com/
Hope your truck gets straightened out soon. It sucks having to pour that much coin into something, and not being able to get your money back out of it.
