Hey everyone I have been reading posts on here about this problem. My question is I picked up 2 sensor the speed sensor in the rearend Wich I figured wouldn't fix my problem. So this leaves me with trying to find where the output shaft speed sensor goes? If someone could help me locate thus would make me very happy lol I have looked on line to try and locate this thing. The only thing left is to check is pull the pan and see if it's in there My truck a 1998 ranger 4x4 automatic thanks for your help

The 2 to 3 flare comes the mind but your problem is only with 1st and 2nd gear. Hmmm just my two cents

When the O/D Off light starts flashing, the computer commands the transmission to go into "Limp Home" mode. Full fluid pressure is sent through the transmission to basically force the shifts, and that is why 1-2 is so rough.

You need to figure out what is causing the O/D Off light to flash. I can almost guarantee that it isn't because of speed sensors.

Your truck is throwing transmission codes, but they can't be read by the scanners at Autozone, Advance, etc. You need to take it to a transmission shop to have them read the codes to figure out what is going on. More than likely, you're looking at a full transmission rebuild.

More of my two cents: maybe shift bands need adjusted?

Thanks guy's for all the replys.also I meant to tell everyone it has been doing this for the past 2 years. And I recently started driving it about 6 months ago and the reason I haven't thought much about it was when the person I bought it from said the transmissions was rebuilt and it had a shift kit and in my mind I was like a shift kit doesn't shift like that lol anyway long story short this is where I'm at with this. Drives good runs good and other than the shifting from 1st to 2nd it's doing fine so I'm hoping it's not to bad. Thanks.

I've got bad news for you. I drove my truck for four years with an O/D Off light that would intermittently flash. It didn't come on all the time, and when it did, I would stop and shut the truck off to reset it. I figured out when and under what circumstances the O/D Off light would start flashing. So I would avoid that situation and it usually kept the light from coming on.

However, four years and 30,000 miles later at 72,000 miles, the transmission failed on me, big time. I honestly think that it would have failed sooner if I didn't baby it the way I did. If you've been driving the truck with the O/D Off light flashing constantly, it's a ticking time bomb. It will go out when you least expect it.

my sons 99 had the same symptoms and we limped it along for about 6 months before I gave in and took it to a local shop, $2800 later it was fixed. had major damage inside, he said when the light started flashing is when we should have brought it in to have them read the code and not 6 months later. so if you can get a professional to read the codes for you.

I did that when I drove my ex-girlfriends explorer around. Figured out how to manipulate the throttle to keep it from slipping. I did end up taking it to a transmission shop at one point and have the codes read, can't remember what they were though.
