Default Ford explorer V8 swap

Okay I'm starting this thread for everyone, and myself.

I have no idea what all I need for a V8 swap and want to know what I need.

Also after we have everything figured out on what is needed, we discuss how it's done.

98-2000 I believe explorer. Buy one with a 5.0 in it. That's the easiest route to take being it will have all the parts you'll need.

The other thing you need to do is see if a swap like that is even legal in your area

This. I know some places are picky about years of vehicle and year of motor.

I just finished a swap on '99 2wd. I can help, or I can point you to other forums that have lots of info. So here are some variables; do you have emissions in your state? What year is the truck? 2wd or 4wd?

it's a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 4.0L V6, XLT, off-road. And let me check for the emissions testing

98-01 expo 5.0 awd is the best to look at since your 4x4, if your going to lose 4lo and be full time awd unless you get ahold of a 4406 transfer case from a mid 90s f150 need to change something on the driveshaft if staying with the awd case, 4406 case needs a custom driveshaft to fit, either made or have an f150 extended cab short bed shaft shortened will also need f150 front drive shaft for 4406 case, ranger transfer case shift motor will bolt directly to electric 4406 if you can find one. That's most of the information you'll need, Google 2000 ranger 5.0 swap and you'll find everything you'll need to know

If you find a really nice 96 or early 97 expo or mountaineer you won't have to worry about PATS, with 96 you will certainly get GT40 heads and if early 97 you might get GT40 heads which will give you a bigger selection (and cheaper selection) of headers. Anything newer and you get GT40P heads which technically are mildly better but can be a pain to buy headers for due to the spark plug angles.

You will have to mess with fuel pressure differences between the older 5.0 and the 2000 ranger but IMO it is easier than messing with PATS and headers that cost $700.

One thing I'm always concerned with is if I'm going to be using an engine out of a Ford Explorer it's not going to be new if you buy an explorer, it'll be used, so are there things I should fix or update while the engine is out? Stuff that normally goes out?

I used to learn how to drive on an explorer and all that engine had was problems, it was an '03.

And if you get an explorer engine, you can't use the exhaust, correct

You can use the exhaust manifolds and first downpipes/cats. Everything after that will have to be fabbed at a muffler shop, unless you have a welder and a pipe bender and mad skills at doing such things.

As far as the condition of the motor... decision you have to make. You could get a 97 with 130,00 miles that has never been serviced or get a 97 with 160,000 miles that recently had new timing chain, water pump, oil pump.... it is a guess for anyone at any skill level because most people are not going to tell you all that is wrong with their motor if they even know themselves.

I bought an entire mountaineer, drove it for a few days and have decided to drop it in as is unless I see something obvious while it is hanging from the chain.

Check my thread, it wasn't much but I did go about every route. And as long as your 98-01 ranger to expo, pats and everything else will cross over, one of the simplest swaps out there! Be best to buy a complete Donor vehicle that way you have access to everything you need! Can pick em up pretty around the 1500-2000 dollar range. Bought mine wrecked for 450 and literally made money on the swap, till I bought some extras! Lol.
