Default new ranger recomendations

Well I sold my 97 about a year ago. I have been running carless since then. Now it is time for a new one.

I had a excab with the 4cly and the 5speed manual. I really enjoyed it. Good mileage, very dependable, and plenty of utility.

Now I need some recommendations. I know I want a 01+ Ranger with an extended cab 2wd, but I don't know much about the newer 2.3 or the newer 4.0 Are the transmissions offered on the 01+ truck the same as the past ones? I think I want the 4cyl but the excab 4cly combo is kinda hard to find.

As always thanks for the help

James

I'm not 100% sure but I think I read that in 2001 the 2.3 and 3.0 got the 5 speed automatic first used in the 1997 4.0's but in lighter duty form.

Good to hear about the 2.3s and the five speeds. The reason I am looking for an 01+ is that I am not a big fan of the 2.5 it is just an enlarged 2.3lima. The new duratec engine is what I am after. I am also just not a fan of the 3.0 While it is a very sturdy engine, It is an old design and there is no real reason to get it over the newer 4.0

Any confirmation on the 2.3 and the 5speeds not being offered in the ex-cabs?

Sadly though, the 5-speed automatics had little to no increase in MPG over the previous 4-speed ones.

Well the new ones are only offered with 6ft bed, and Posi is not an option, guess I'll build on my 98 longboy.
