money spent on ranger repairs the last 15 yrs.... and what i've had done.
I'm no mechanic, so it's cost me dearly to own a ranger for 15 yrs... actually I think it owns me... it certainly has cost me a lot financially... .
not counting everything like tires, oil changes, here is what i've done and what i've spent. I paid $12,500 for the truck, and more than that in repairs over the last 15 yrs. not counting oil changes...
I can honestly say I'll never get a ranger again. not sure I'll get another ford, which is tough to say... I've been a ford owner all my life.. of course if I could do this stuff myself, I would have saved tons of money. but that is not the case. lol. theirs a pattern here... the ranger always needs brake work, and now sensors are going bad.... I drive less than 9000 miles a year so it's not like i've dogged the truck...
-23,000 miles. brakes. $263. seems odd, brake work at 23k miles?
(brake work is something Ive done more on the ranger than on any other ford i've owned).
-70,800 miles, calipers, rotors. $590.
-71,000 transmission starts slipping…. making noises…
-72,100, belts, tensioner. $176
-84,490, dash lights out. $180
-86,600, transmission died. rebuilt it. $2800.
-87,190, new EGR sensor, $292
-89,445, timing cover gasket behind water pump starts leaking…. no money to fix yet. dealer said its a $900 repair.
-92,196, DPFE sensor, $250.
-98,498, idler pulley, $100
-98,502, cam synchro assembly sensor, $485.
-99,848, major brake work again, $906
-100,054, 2 lower ball joints, $370
-111,384, transmission repair never worked, now I got a re-manufactured one from the dealer. cost was about $3900.
-114,877, 6 spark plugs wires, coil pack assembly. update PCM. $1,073.
-116,414, brakes caliper leaking badly. $375
-116,514, brakes pads $320.
-124,154 leaf spring hanger, $350.
-126,639, new radiator and hoses. $458.
-126,814, new water pump. $309.
-128,433 new u joints, $317
-129,875, clean brakes resurface rotors, $179
-132,355 new oil pressure sensor, $104.
-134,748 thermostat and gasket. $129
-136,500… Throttle Position sensor, $145…. coming up soon.
total: $14,071 in repairs in the last 15 years, not counting oil changes, tires....
it's been an expensive truck to keep on the road all these years.... I love the ranger and hate it too. lol.

Sounds more like the shop owns you. Did you have the same place do all of the work?

You should start doing your own work or go to cheaper shops... Those labor prices are way too high.

Before a bunch of people spear you, let me just say- I understand your frustration. I fix my own stuff, but I can imagine it would be painful financially for anyone keeping a car when they have to pay others to fix it. I never realized when I was 10 working on the car with my dad how much hell he would eventually save me from.
But im going to also say this- avoiding ford isnt going to fix your problem. Youre fucked no matter what manufacturer you go with.
97-2010 f150 (especially 5.4l but also 4.6l)- blow spark plugs
2004-2010 f150- cam phasers (often taking engine before 150k)
2011+ ecoboost- CAC stumble, carbon buildup (in some cases)
2011+ 5.0 coyote- cam phasers? Not sure.
2000s nissan titans- radiator splits between trans and coolant, shortly after transmission is destroyed.
Dodge anything- automatic transmissions, head gaskets, and piss poor interiors
Toyota- perpetual frame rot in northern climates, and quality isnt what it used to be. By 100k my 78 yo grandfathers car (07 camry) had needed: a new pcm, belt tensioner, calipers/brakes, alternator, pcm again, a fuel pump, and a coil pack.
Volkswagen- dont get me started
Subaru- head gaskets, transmissions (manual or automatic)
Chevrolet- lines rusting, poor suspension durability. Admittedly dont know of huge problems, but I know they have them.
Then there is the myriad of ways manufacturers try to get out of warranty claims. Missing one receipt of oil change? Denied. Rubber on inside wells of rear tires? Driven beyond designed limits- denied. Young and own an wrx STI? Denied- too young, must have done something wrong (im exaggerating here, but the attitudes of subaru wrt the STI claims is legend). It goes on and on and on and on. I once read of an extended warranty that covered everything in the drivetrain- clutch slave went out, and thats when he found out only the slave wasnt covered (it was in the fine print).
Bottom line, there is no refuge today. Be thankful you had the ranger instead of something worse (and believe me, it could be much much worse)- its relatively cheap and easy to fix even if cheaply built. You might get lucky, but theres no guarantees.
**EDIT** And I agree- some of the prices and what "needed" to be fixed seems a bit dubious.

You are averaging less than a thousand bucks a year. Which is less than $100 a month. I'd say you are doing pretty good.

What makes me feel it is a shop problem is the 1000 dollar tune up, I went through the same thing when I got my ranger when the clutch needed to be replaced and radiator cracked 1100$, then an entire suspension rebuild that cost 500, then clutch again 10k later but luckily the shop was good to me.

And my wife's brand new Toyota RAV4 has issues going into reverse when it's cold out. You really don't know what you're getting when you buy a vehicle. If I were you either learn how to fix your truck or sell it.

You realize dash lights out is ~$5 fix right?
TPS sensor I bought for my truck for ~$50 and removed two Phillips head screws and replaced it. Took five minutes.
DPFE sensor is somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 and has one connector on it and pulls off of two hoses right next to the engine.

Hey man,
I've been in the same situation exactly, except with an 89 blazer. I was in high school and didn't know shit about vehicles or mechanics in general. I forked over thousands and bent over while shops took me for a ride. After long enough of that I sold the vehicle and bought something different. I promised myself I would never pay a mechanic again to do something I was capable of, but scared to try. That was 8 years ago, and not a cent has been spent by me on labor at a shop since.
No matter which vehicle you choose, shops are going to charge through the nose to fix it. It's a business. They're out to make money.
I understand that everyone is in a different situation, some with more free time than others. I would suggest, as others here have, to try doing as much yourself as you can. Oil changes, brakes, and lots of other maintenance require only a socket set or a set of wrenches. If you don't have a set pick some up. They'll pay for themselves very quickly. Mechanics are only people and there's thousands of how-to videos online.

Pretty much everything you listed besides a few things could have been done at home with a little expense for tools. I currently change oil at a ford dealership while I'm in college and I hate to say it but a lot of the stuff you probably didn't need. Dealerships are probably the worst place to take your vehicle. They really only care about how much money they make in the end. Even if you have warranty they will screw you cuz that means they have to pay to fix it. Most of the time they overlook problems if you have warranty.
So just learn to work on your truck and become a YouTube pro!

Sound advice on this thread. I would highly recommend, as others have, that you look into the possibility of repairing your truck yourself.
A few years back, I asked my wife to take my truck to a local shop for a state inspection while I was at work. My truck wound up getting rejected, due to a worn lower ball joint in the left front, and worn wheel bearings in the right front. The shop bid on the repairs at just over $1000.
Instead of paying the shop to do the work, I decided to tackle it myself. Rather than replacing just one ball joint on one side and wheel bearings on the other, I replaced both front rotors (new bearing races), all of the front wheel bearings and the grease seals, and both lower ball joints. I had to purchase a few tools that I didn't have to do this, and when completed the entire repair cost me about $350, and from start to finish it took me about six hours, using only hand tools, in the driveway.

This is an example of why you should learn how to fix your own stuff. You can save thousands of dollars.... which I did repairing my ranger but it took almost the whole summer because when I got it, it was a pos

I could have saved significantly if I opted only to replace the things it failed for, but... I had never serviced any of the front suspension (was around 140k at the time). If I had done only wheel bearings, I would have to drive new races into a rotor that already had 140k on it. I could do just one ball joint, but how far behind could the other ball joint be? I definitely agree on doing your own repairs. In my case I saved about $650, and also replaced a lot of technically still usable parts in the name of preventitive maintenance.
