Default A Loss In the Family... Where to go from here?

It has been a rough past couple of weeks for me as I have experienced a loss in the family. My poor 2001 Ford Ranger 5-speed 4.0 and 4x4 was attacked by a Pontiac Grand Prix in early October. She was T-Boned and spun nearly 360 degrees while sliding across an intersection. Thankfully I was the only person in the truck when it happened and I walked away without injury. However, my poor Ranger was man-handled by two tow trucks and hauled away on a flat-bed. She was later deemed "totaled" by the insurance company. Unfortunately she was too far gone for me and I wouldn't have the time or money it would take to bring her back to life. Since the accident I couldn't find a similar Ranger that I could afford so I have purchased a very clean 1998 Silverado which is a very nice truck but is no where near as fun to drive as my Ranger was. Sadly I don't foresee this truck lasting me too long.
If anyone has (or knows where to find) a Ranger that would be similar to the one I had for fairly reasonable pricing I would love to be back in a Ranger. I might also be interested in a rolling shell or something with a blown motor because I was looking to do either a 302 or 4BT swap in a Ranger.
Sorry for a pointless thread but I needed to vent a little and try to figure out where to go from here. It would also be interesting to hear any stories from other people about a Ranger they may have lost or had to give up and what they did afterwards.

They were driving down a street less than a block over and turned right on to the street I was crossing they were going WAY too fast. They were not in sight when I entered the intersection and I didn't even see them until I was spun around facing the way I came from.

Luckily, no I didn't get a ticket. That would have sent me over the edge on top of losing my Ranger. Unfortunately, they weren't ticketed either...

they weren't the at fault party. They weren't the one that pulled out. You could get a citation in the mail in a few weeks from the accident

I was told by the officer on the scene that nobody would be receiving any citations.

I know how that feels...

First, I was in the same kind of accident where the other driver was going 80 mph on a 50 mph road in the fog (when I was a kid, my brother and I in the back seat, mom driving) and we were turning onto it, not seeing him. We gpt T boned as well, but all walked away. That car was a 98 Explorer, and I got my first car because of it - an 06 Ranger, because I wanted a truck not a SUV.

Earlier this year, some asshat ran me off the highway when I was going 70 (safely, only two people on the road, me and him) he dodged from the far left lane to the far right of a 3 lane road to brake check me for no fucking reason, and I got forced head on into a guardrail... not sure how exactly, still don't completely remember the crash...

After that, I needed a car quick to get me to work so I bought a great 2002 Ranger 2 days later. 2 weeks after that, I took it to a shop for an oil change (Fucking Detroit area, I swear, just stay away) and they fucked it up somehow, later causing the engine to quit for good. Long story short we sued them and that truck is now my dad's dd.

After that incident, I decided 2 things.
1: I will do as much of my own work as I can.
2: I was going to spend some time to find exactly what I wanted as my new truck, as my dad wanted the 02 when it came out of the shop and would trade me whatever we agreed on.

I got a list going, of what I wanted. It was 2 mandatory things with a few extras that could be nice... It had to be a Reg. cab, with a V6, Manual, and newer than 2001. I ended up getting an EDGE that was blue with a topper and a cool Powerdome, so some extras were met! And it was cheap because the PO didn't like it was a Ford so he removed all badges and modded a lot of the cosmetic stuff.

In short (sorry that got long) hold on to your chevy for now, make a list of what you want, and set a price limit... look on Craigslist often, and when you find the right one jump on it. Good luck, and sorry for your loss!

It's a terrible feeling, this was the first accident I was in and being a car guy it kills me inside that I totaled it. That is some good advise though, about making a list and waiting. I'm in college right now (Automotive Engineering) so funds are tight and it will probably be a while before I'm in a Ranger again. I had pretty much my ideal truck and I'm definitely missing the 5-speed. Around here it is really hard to find a clean Ranger with the 4.0, 4x4 and 5-speed for a reasonable price.

It is a bad feeling, absolutely terrible, and yeah, my good advice comes with a cost... I've been in 5 accidents this year where the car was totalled (out of the normal for me) and 4 of them is was a friend driving their own car... I've made so many lists this year and helped them get over it and move on (all car people as well)

Ive only ever actually seen 1 4x4 manual Ranger, so I know they aren't common in this area, usually they're autos (I'm in Michigan) so if you still have your old truck, you could do a manual swap!

And you're studying to be an automotive engineer? At my school it's called a mechanical engineer with automotive specialty, and I am in it! Cool to know!

unfortunately, no I don't have my Ranger anymore. And technically my program is Automotive Engineering Technologies. It is supposed to be a combination of Engineering and a technician school, with more focus on the engineering side of things. It is really hands-on so I like it quite a bit.
