Default Searching for a ranger, have a few questions.

Hello everyone,

Apologies in advance for the incoming long post with lots of noob questions, i did as much internet searching as i could before posting this but still have some questions left unanswered and i appreciate any answers/criticism/feedback i get.

Im currently searching for an auto 01+ 4x4 and have narrowed the search down to about 3-4 trucks.

Im looking to spend about $5000 maximum on the truck itself, which i know wont get me very much, ill probably end up with a truck well over 150k miles on it and probably some scratches and maybe minor dents and dings.

Just had a few questions about what to look for on these trucks when buying used with higher mileage. Im obviously going to inspect very thoroughly for rust and any major damage, minor dents dings and scratches dont bother me too much.

What else should i look for though? Most of the trucks in the price range i have been looking at around around the 180k to 190k mileage mark, some around the 160 to 170 mark. Ive seen these trucks with 200k to 300k and even more on the 4.0 v6, so assuming that previous the previous owner(s) did any type of timely maintenance or upkeep on the truck how long could i expect the 4.0 to go for me? assuming they didnt wheel the trucks too hard.

Is there a good way to find out if the 4wd high and low are functioning correctly?

What noises should i be on the look out for?

Also have a question regarding trim levels. most of the trucks i have been looking at have been the edge models, some are the XLT and one has been a XLT FX4 level II.

I think i read that the edge models are the ones usually bought for a more basic truck that has some appearance additions. In my narrowed down search there is an edge plus model, which i believe is the edge but has some more power options such as windows and doors but overall is the same as the edge.

Is the XLT the more expensive version of the edge due to more power components/different appearance?

What is the difference between the FX4 Level II off road and the XLT FX4 Level II? the one im looking at is the XLT level II but the FX4 decal on the back of the truck says Tonka Level II, is there some difference between it and regular Level II trucks?

So far from reading the forums ive seen that the only major difference between an edge and an FX4 off road package truck is upgraded shocks, a limited slip rear diff and either 2 or 3 skidplates depending on if its the level 2 or not. As well as different interior styling. Is there anything else that im missing?

I have a short term plan and a long term plan for the truck.

Short term is a T-Bar crank to 1.5 to 2 inches if possible, which in the maximum wheel/tire thread says will allow for some 33/10.5/15s on the truck, so ill be throwing some BFG MT2s on. Was either going to try to find some premade skidplates or fab my own, i hear the stock ranger skidplates are basically just a fancy splash puddle and will bend as soon as anything rough actually hits them. Also looking to either buy a premade front bumper or fab my own if i cant find one i like. Also looking for a rear swing out bumper with tire rack and fuel container area. Will be putting a winch on the front as well.

Long term is a 4" superlift, then put some 35" MTs on the truck. Get a camper shell and roof rack, a fold out awning and an inflatable bed in the back of the truck. Rear diff lockers, possibly front lockers. Maybe some better seats if i can find any for cheap. Id like to put in a center console at some point but interior isnt priority #1 with the truck. Finally id like to look into putting on a supercharger kit at some point, think that would be a good idea on a truck that could possibly have 200k+ miles on it by then? Maybe upgraded internals would be needed?

I know it seems kind of odd to want all this on a truck thats $5000 or less but im hoping to make it work.

Last question, if i plan on having my own skidplates put on, rear lockers installed and upgraded shocks is there really a need for the fx4 off road or level II? other than to say hey look i got a rarer version than the edge.

My short term goal for the truck is just something that i can get through backwoods trails, some not super thick/deep mud, moderate off roading, not gonna be doing anything like the rubicon trail or anything like that.

long term goal is to have a capable overland vehicle that could get me to places a lot of vehicles couldnt go, i want to be able to go out for days at a time and not have to worry about if im gonna be stuck because i didnt come prepared.

Here are a couple of the trucks i was looking at -

This first one is in first place so far because its a lot closer to me than others and the body doesnt look too bad aside from the paint coming off the bumpers, flares and bed trim.

This next one is a runner up, its priced pretty cheap for the mileage and i did a quick image search on google and i saw one picture of the truck had a new headlight on the passenger side and a older headlight on the driver side, im thinking a crash or accident happened at some point resulting in the low price.

Everything seems to be in order on this truck from the provided pictures, there seems to be a little rust/oxidation on the tailgate but other than that it seems okay.

Here is the XLT FX4 Level II i was talking about, i havent seen the "Tonka level II" decals anywhere else so i was hoping to get some info on that. It looks to have a dual exhaust so the owner might have been giving it some fun off road, or the other option is the underside is rusted out and has had some replacement parts put in.

Thanks for reading this stupidly long post but i want to get as much info as i can before buying.

Those prices seem like they make more sense for trucks in the 150k mile range, at least that's how the market seems to be around where I am

I need to call to get the mileage on the first truck i linked, emailing them just gets me the copy/paste response.

sent an email saying " hey i was wondering how many miles were on the ranger in your main lot"

response " yes the 2003 ford ranger is still available, please visit us or call for more information!" ...

Gotcha. I hate how bad the peeling is on the crappy black paint job the previous owner did on the paint matched bumpers and fenders

Ill eventually be replacing them with self made bumpers, unless i can find some premade bumpers i like. Hoping to be able to talk down the price a little bit with the bumpers and fenders peeling so bad. Fenders i was planning on repainting all black anyways so im not bothered. For what i have planned, cosmetics dont have too high of a priority until i get all the parts in that i want.

Both of those trucks are FX4 LEVEL II's technically. The 02 FX4 is the same thing as a 2003+ fx4 level II's

The one that says tonka is just some eBay sticker the previous owner bought.

i was wondering about that tonka sticker, i was thinking it was just some sticker the owner bought and slapped on there.

looks like the first ranger i linked is around the 168k mile mark.

So if im planning on putting in a rear locker, skid plates and new shocks will i really miss anything the fx4 has to offer if i go with the edge?

Not really. The last FX4 looks the cleanest of all the trucks, though.

yeah it does look a lot cleaner than the others. Theres a few more i found within the same price range but theyre all 650+ miles away, im still leaning to the first red one since its at least in the same state lol. Im hoping the people will be able to send me some underbody pics of the truck before i go anywhere to look at them, dont want to go 200 miles just to find out its a rust bucket that has been polished and waxed on the outside.
