lost keys- locksmith wants $200!--- 2003 Ranger
I lost my ignition key with the built-in transponder. I do have a spare door only key ---NO transponder.
Can I get a couple of transponder keys cut somewhere(hardware store, locksmith) from my door key and program these new keys myself ??? or will I need to pay a locksmith $200 to do it.
I am hoping I can get a couple of new transponder keys made for $15-$20 each ???? and then program them myself.
Thanks !!!!

You can only program them yourself if you already have 2... have you checked with ford? I paid under $100 for my spare...

The ford dealer can program them for less than the locksmith. It will still be a total criminal rip off but not as bad.

First, you must have 2 chip keys to program, so if you don't, which is what your original post says, then you have to buy 2 keys and have them programmed AT THE DEALERSHIP!
If its the big black headed key:
If so they are $20 each x 2 + $37.50 to program them ($77.50 + tax), and the truck has to be brought to the dealer, plus when you find the lost keys, you will have to program them again, but that you can do yourself.
If it's the flat headed key with FORD in the middle:
They are $27 X 2 + $37.50 to program ($91.50 + tax)
Prices may vary from where you are, but those prices there are from our dealership that I work in.......................

if you have a second key with a transponder it is very easy 2 add a second key to the system (only if you have 1 key thats already programmed to the car).
if you do not have a key you must go to the dealer t program it to the car because it has to be programmed to the car with a computer.
i don't remember what we charged when i was working for Ford bu i know it was less than $200

On the lost key that you were talking about. I lost the only key to my 2000 ford ranger. The locksmith wants $135 to make a new key and another $75 if it needs a transponder. I saw on ebay that you can buy a blank transponder key for about $12.00. How do you make sure that the key you get is really good enough to cut the door and ignition lock. And what would they have to do with the blank I provide for them? Thanks, Tom

Re: lost keys- locksmith wants $200!--- 2003 Ranger
I only had one key for my F 150 when i went to the locksmith at my local home depot and he made me two keys from the one transponder key i had. He copied the code from the one he had. He stuck it into some kind of thing about the size of a transistor radio which copied the code without erasing the one in the original key ad stored it until he deleted it
Im not sure if there is a way to do it without the key but this eas way cheaper than the dealer or the local locksmith thief

What is not understood from this post????
The Labor time to program is 1/2 hour and labor rates do vary, ours is $75/HR.
The first key pic is for 98-01 and the second key is for 2002-up.
