The main reason for using a LED, a regular bulb would burn out again at some point making the code 27 return.
LED's normally run somewhere in the 3V range, the resistor essentially drops the 12V from the car to the lower voltage the LED needs to operate.
A regular bulb would be easier because you don't have to worry about positive and negative. The polarity was explained clearly in the original link though he didn't explain polarity but we all have google
Anode is positive on the LED and cathode is negative. Negative on the board is closest to the edge and positive is toward the middle of the board. The resistor doesn't care and can be on either leg.
