Until I see a Ford auto tranny last as long as the motor I'll always be weary.

You can drive the 4 cyl auto quite "vigorously" and it it becomes a whole different machine than if you drive with an egg under your throttle foot.
I do this all the time on my 2010 and still average over 24 mpg.

This!! The older autos are slush boxes. Why do you think all the mustang guys get stick's unless it's a v6 vert its a stick shift trany in there.

All fixed with a $125 shift kit which can be installed in your driveway.
Done it on two of my vehicles with great results.

I had over 285k miles on my 03 Edge that got wrecked. Trans shifted fine.............but I also did a full synthetic flush at 50-75k intervals.
