Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
So, I found this tent trailer for free on c list. It needs work and I thought to myself, "What a perfect deal!! I can just build this thing into an off road camper!!"
Here's the issue, how do you do that? Some bigger tires to help with rolluing over light offroading terrain. But that's sorta where I get stuck, what else could be done?
I'd love to hear some ideas!
Thnx,
Eddie

Working on gathering parts, paint, vynals, and such for the rest of the build LOL. I use this as an everyday truck, but it's also the only truck I have for hunting and general off road fun. Hoping to make it much better than stock!

lock the rear on ur truck and and u should be fine/ maybe a little bigger tires on the camper, but i dont see how it would effect it that much.

Re: Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
^^^^ yes!!!! You can't really lift it bc that will cause it to sway and be incredibly topheavy. But opening up the fenderwells and throwing bigger tires o. It will def help. Pics?

Re: Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
Haven't picked it up yet, waiting for word on it from the owner. He didn't post any pics either However, even if this one for some reason doesn't work out, I'll want to do this with whatever trailer we end up with.

Any idea how to accomplish this?

Re: Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
Ok, here's a pic of that trailer....
I'm thinking maybe just rework a couple wheel wells into it and some slightly bigger tires and we're good to go? It's a 1969 Apache Tent Trailer.... Apparently the're decent for off road travel anyhow.
Reason for me needing it to be an off roader is because when I head for the hills, I like to get to places most people can't or won't go. Keeps things quiet that way, and keeps the thieves and drunk retards away.
There was one spot my dad used to take me, and this is where I got the idea to get up and away, but, anyhow, you litterally couldn't get there any other time but summer. You had to go up adry creek bed to get to this spot. Once up there, there's roads all over, and a couple nice lakes. But it's a bitch getting up there LOL. Fun tho!

Re: Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
if its a solid beam axle with leafs, you can usually flipped the axle under the leafs for about a 2-3inch lift

Re: Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
you can go with a pintle hitch for off road....also there's a company that makes a hitch that acts like a cv joint in a way, it allows it to rotate and such......can't remember the name....but googling a little might help ya....

Outstanding! I'm looking that site over and thinking I might just do what this fella is doing.

I'll look at that as well. Between those two ideas, (pintle hitch and swap out for a stonger axle and bigger tires, make new wheel well) it should do just fine, and last us a long time.

Re: Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
That black trailer is sweet but what I would do is take the frame off the chassis and extend the chassis out and build a deck to put a quad on it then reinstall the frame.

Re: Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
Not a bad Idea, make it dual wheels. Deck can also serve as a sort of "Porch", awning covering the entry to the tent....

Re: Building an Off Road Camp Trailer?
Well, we got out there to get that Apache trailer and it turned out the guy gave it to someone else.... Would have been nice to have been told....
So, today or tomorrow, we're picking this up:
It's a 1989 Cambi Tent Trailer. Picking it up for $250 and then I'll be at least flipping the axle, and if I find some other sort of tires/wheels for a reasonable price, I might cut wheel wells to add bigger tires, and add a square tube back bumper. We'll see. If nothing else, I'll just sit on it as it is for a while, it should do just fine. Maybe I'll make that this winter's project, to fix it up. Just enjoy it as it is for this summer.
