I've had a ranger before. I never expected good mileage. It costs me less than $30 to fill it so I'm not complaining it any way lol

There is that lol. I like filling both trucks for what it used to cost to fill one.

Re: 3.0 vs 4.0 engine
[QUOTE=ranger024x4;2365402]If i was worried about "pulling power", i wouldnt be looking at a 4cyl or the 3.0.. Or even a ranger for that matter
----------
Sorry....I thought trucks were used for work and not drag racing. My mistake.

Re: 3.0 vs 4.0 engine
Never had a 4.slow but I've run three 3.0 Fords and still have two of them. Tough little engines...fast? no way...reliable, you bet...fuel efficient? so so...good for working? yep...will it pull a mule backwards? no, but who wants to in a small truck...get the diesel out for that. Also, this like the fourth Ranger forum I've frequented and there seem to more "what's wrong with my 4.0" threads than from the other engine classes/sizes...just an observation. I wish Ford would make a small I-6 with real fuel injection and guts as tough as the old 4.9L I-6...but they lost a lot of money on that workhorse cause you just couldn't kill em' unless you ran them with the sump dry...rebuild, rebuild, rebuild, rebuild...get a short block, rebuild, rebuild, rebuild, repeat, repeat, repeat.

Re: 3.0 vs 4.0 engine
The 3.0 is good, 4.0 ohv is, and the 4.0 sohc is good. The 3.0 seems to have issues with camshaft syncronizers, you never hear about the ones with distributors. The sohc 4.0 had chain tensioner issues in the early 2000s. If you overheat any engine you run the risk of cracking heads.

That's only in the ohvs. Ford learned a lot from the 2.8, 2.9, and the OHV 4.0 when it came to block and cylinder head design. The reason the SOHC has the timing chain in the back is because they used the OHV block design and ran a jackshaft through where the camshaft in the OHV was in order to drive the oil pump, and the timing chain.

Oil pump, I understand it's a type-o, not trying to be a dick, just wanted to avoid confusion. Also the SOHC has aluminum heads so almost definitely warped if you overheat it.

Oil, yes sorry, hahah. Got lost in my words. Warped yes. But like I said, ford learned A lot from the notoriously cracked heads from the 2.8&2.9

Re: 3.0 vs 4.0 engine
I can't speak to the reliability of the 4 cylinders or the 4.0 but I am very happy with the 3.0 in my 2000 Ranger. It pulls my small boat and utlity trailer loaded with a zero turn mower very well. I use the hemi to pull the kubota so I don't know how the ranger would pull it, not very well I suspect. I got 250K and would probably gotten more if I would have managed the cooling system better through the years...

I have had 2.9 and I have a 4.0 now I love the 4.0! It has a lot more power and sounds better
