Default What should I know about the ranger?

Hi! I'm new to Ford never owned one before until now. I came across a deal I could not pass up, I just bought a 2000 Ranger ext cab stepside 4X4 automatic 3.0 v6 flex for $2500 great shape and 92,000miles.

My question is...what are some thing I should know about this model of Ranger, if any?

The only thing "wrong" with it is the Check Engine lite is on. The dealer said it was EGR so it was replaced but the light is still on. They said don't worry about it.

Thanks!

For the engine light, I would suggest a DPFE sensor. I had a 2000 that had an engine light and although the code read as an EGR, it was actually the DPFE sensor that caused the code. I had the same engine you do. Its a small box on the front of the intake with two rubber hoses going from it to the drivers side exhaust manifold area.

Now we need pics of your truck!!

It's possible that the light will go off when the engine runs it's little tests on the new part for a few trips.
CEL doesn't go on the minute most faults are detected, just like it doesn't go off the minute it's fixed.
But yeah codes are generated by system monitors which get you really close so if it doesn't go out, then there's Jazz921's advice.

Awesome deal man! I have the same truck and the check engine light was on too. The mechanic said it was the intake manifold gasket, i had another look at it and it was an intake hose that got dried out and just cracked! It was alot cheaper than the gasket! Mine has run like a champ just have it looked over really good. change the oil have the coolant flushed and filled (jiffy lube does it and it's good for 100k) try a tune up and all that just so it is looked over well in that aspect. I'm in no way a mechanic so i am learning as i go too. I just got my truck a few months ago, it came with a 4" suspension lift and i just put a 3" body lift and it's awesome man!! It has a cold air intake on it as well for better gas mileage. I have tons of spare interior parts if you need them and a buddy of mine is the ultimate guru of rangers (he helped me put the body lift on) so send me a private message if you need anything or have questions and good luck with it, post pics too!

Great thanks I appreciate that! I just might need some door parts, looks like the bottom striker is bad and not latching on the drivers side.
The dome light stays on and the door ajar light is on. I need to look into it a little more.

Dont trust jiffy lube. Went there to have them change the oil on a maxima because I was lazy and the buyer wanted it done before he bought it. Car didnt even make it across the street when I left there. They put the new oil in before they even took off the oil filter (I know because you come from the top to get those oil filters off), then there was so much oil on the ground that it looked like they didnt even drain the old oil. Called some corp guy in Tulsa and he called the car a piece of shit without even seeing it, and said I was trying to run a scam.

Then I went online and saw they have websites devoted to people talking about how jiffylube messed up their car.

I guess it depends on where you go. I have a habit of watching those guys like a hawk to make sure its done right, and make it a point to them that i watch everything they do because if they mess things up, i'll be sure to get my stuff done for free

And apparantly you should keep a spare DPFE sensor in your glove compartment.
