Default Re: Found out today I don't have ABS

Well i have a 94 ranger and just yesterday i was driving home and i had to stop for gas and so i got off the exit and i guess i pressed on the brakes to much or something because i spun out , got completely freaked out and i was very close to flipping over but luckly i was ok

Ive noticed my abs light has been on , do i even have abs on a vehicle this old and if so wouldnt what happened to me not happen if it was working correctly

Or could just the sensors be dirty or something

Nope, you don't have ABS. They were just bored and put the light on your dash for the hell of it

You do have some form of ABS, though I'm not sure if it is rear only or 4 wheel. Regardless, if the light is on then your ABS system has detected a fault and is not working properly if at all. My first suggestion would be a battery disconnect and see if the self-corrects. But its 11 years old and a sensor going bad is well within the realm of possibility.

And I would suggest driving less insane on highway off ramps with or without ABS....

Yeah i just thought they might have wanted to mess with me and add the light to piss me off

I wasent going to insane down the ramp , mabye going around 30 or so and once i pressed on the brakes i spun out

were on my vehicle is the sensors , obviously its in the rear somewere , but is the plugs to test right on the rear axle and after i do a test and if both positive and negative plugs are good , then were would the sensor be located

89~94 had RABS standard
95~2000 had RABS standard, 4WABS as a standalone or bundled option
2001+ has 4WABS standard (RABS discontinued)

The only sensor for RABS is on the top of the differential. There is pin in the test connector under the dash that can be grounded to make the ABS indicator lamp flash out a Light Fault Code. The factory shop manual gives the complete test procedure and the fault code list. Here's some online info:

i spun around a few times going on or off the highway, i also had to run a red light today, when i stepped on the brakes, it just started to slide and if i didn't go i would have ended up stopping in the middle of an intersection that blows.

My last car did not have ABS, oh man it was NOT fun not having ABS since my Explorer had them before I got the car. When I got the Ranger I have now, I was soo glad to have it again.

my 87 did not have ABS and it was kinda fun.....if you liked living on the edge on a rainy/snowy day

it did have an ABS spot in the dash but no light behind it...

willing to bet my 85 doesn't have it either

Isn't ABS with drum brakes for lack of a better word...dumb? I know on Ford cars rear disc brakes and ABS seem to go hand in hand.

Typically this is referred to as traveling too fast for the conditions...

Do you have ANY idea how little sense this entire statement makes? You have a grave misunderstanding of how friction and braking action works. Remind me to stay behind you so I don't get hit.
Do you know how abs works?

There are situations where the abs system does more harm than good.

Yes I know how it works. And I have yet to have anyone explain a situation where not having it would actually do more harm than good. Some try and they're usually senseless explanations.

ABS is fantastic for the average driver. I can't
think of a situation where a correctly working ABS
system would be more harm than good for
the average driver. But from experience I can
and will say ABS systems is NOT for all
above average drivers, especially concerning
driving where "rear end" driving is used as
a form of control. Be this from dirt driving
to the burnout drags (not drag racing), but
the sport of actually doing burnouts, to doing the
stunts of 180/360 degree slide arounds.
Let's just say, if I'm wanting to slide my vehicle
ABS is NOT going to help me do it!

But again, the average person would be scared
to death if he slid his vehicle. Just saying there
is a need for NOT having ABS. It's just not
that this involves average drivers.

For myself, I like both equally, according to what
I want accomplished....
