Default Looking to buy Ranger

I have a friend that has a 2000 Ford Ranger with 230000 miles on it. What do y'all think would be a descent price for it? I was thinking about $1000.00? A/C works, 3.0L engine has no strange noises, front end needs some work (control arms & suspension), overall body is in good condition and interior... well lets just say he wasn't very clean. Tires are all good and it just passed inspection. Let me know what you think. I cant find any Rangers with that many miles on it so it kind of worries me. I know it wont last forever but if i can get another 20-30000 out of it I think it might be worth it!

it's the 3.0. And if he did all the regular maintenance when he should have and it's still running good at 230k I'd say take it. You might be able to get another 75-100k out of it. Just make sure it doesn't need another camshaft sync and check plugs. Also before you run away with it check for rust on the frame. Climb underneath it and really look at everything

Wow you think it should get that many more miles??? That would be great! Its a Texas truck so not much rust at all! Frame still shows the black factory paint through all the dust of course! So you think thats a fair price?

----------

How would I know if it needs a cam shaft synch? What do I need to listen to?

it's called the chirp of death. It should be changed every 100k miles give or take a couple thousand. Make sure the coolant system works too

I was going to change that on my 3.0 took it to Ford and they said that she was fine. The guy said that it makes a loud screeching notice before it goes out.

change it when it chirps. The screeching noise means detonation could happen anytime soon

On mine there is only a squeaking sound when she's cold, after the engine heats up, you can't even hear a lifter in that engine

I have a 2000 XLT Ranger that I bought for $3000. The interior was spotless and the body is also flawless...very good condition. It had about 185,000 on when I bought it. I have driven the wheels off this thing in the last 18 months...now has 217,000. An Aerospace Engineer college kid at Auburn owned it and did all the maintenance himself.

I have put a good amount of money into it just because it is a hobby more than REALLY necessary fixes! I had to have the trans rebuild about 3 weeks ago...that sucked

If you can get one for $1000...I say go for it. Parts are cheap and if something really major happens...you can junk it for that price!

We'll.. Id say that's a 1200-1500 truck, I got a 1000 out of my 93 2.3l 2wd, 200k miles, only issues were it was rusted to the max. But frame was still strong(body and little misc things were rusted out) and I still got 1000.. So there's a comparison for ya

It's very difficult to price old trucks with over 200k on them, the way i do it is by the Grand mexican rule, If you've ever sold an old truck on craigslist you'd know the majority of prospective buyers that have the balls to be looking at 200k and up trucks are....mexicans, they don't care if it has 500,000 miles, rusted frames, and dead hookers in the bed, all they care is that it runs.

$1000 is the price a mexican will pay for a truck that runs, condition aside, to ferry drugs and humans across the border a few times,
The $1000 assumes the truck has enough life in it to make it to mexico ONCE, it may be suffering from problems such as ,
Body rust,
Frame rust
Engine Problems
Transmission problems,
Bald tires,
worn Clutch,
Suspension problems
Interior that smells like shit
NOT a 4WD

When caluclating price after evaluating your prospective truck, for each issue it doesn't have, ADD 100 bucks

For example, My truck had the following things going for it
No frame rust Add 100
No body Rust Add 100
No transmission problems Add 100
4wd add 100
Fresh smelling interior/no blood stains add 100
