Default *Rant*

So this morning I got up nice and early so I could make it to walmart before work to get oil and an oil filter and the tools needed to change the oil. This would've been the first time I would've changed the oil, and I was excited because I like to be able to work on my truck and make sure that it would be done the right way. I got under the truck to take out the drain plug and THE BOLT IS STRIPPED FROM THE LAST TIME IT WAS CHANGED FROM A LOCAL GARAGE!!!!! Now I have to wait until next Tuesday so that they can chisel out my drain plug that's circular because of them stripping it the last time, and while they're at it they have to change the oil and filter. So now I'm a salty guy, woke up this morning with a great outlook going to work on my truck, get it all done right and found out I spend $22 and a trip to walmart and back(about 10miles each way) to find out I can't even do the oil change myself. Now I have to wait another 3000 miles to be able to do it myself! But I did find out that a set of ramps for the truck would be AMAZING for when I do have to do it. Really pissed that I can't do it myself now, I was actually really looking forward to it. Sucks that the shop had to do a crappy job and ruin my first time changing the oil *END RANT*

I hear ya. I changed my oil alright for my first time a few weeks ago but the filter is cranked on there like crazy from a dealer where I bought it. Now I have to pay from them to take it off.

Did you try using vice grips like said above? Or you could drill a hole in the head of the bolt and put a piece of metal through it to turn it?

I'm poor and cheap. Would have tried a small pipe wrench on the bolt with a hunk of pipe over the handle if needed for more leverage. Second option would have been a chisel and hammer to get the bolt started. Big pain for me would have been having to chase down another drain plug. On that oil filter, old school method is jam a screwdriver crossways through the bottom of the filter and try turning it to loosen. Me?--big pipe wrench. They also make those strap-wrench looseners.

Another option is to use a hacksaw/dremel and make the bolt head, a flat head

Gotta love noob's! Is he saying the head of the bolt is, stripped? Does he know about channel locks, vice grips or pipe wrenches? It's not like it is rusted and torqued to 70lbs and it's sitting in oil!

Channel lock stud pliers work even better the more you tug on them the better the bite. They blow regular channel locks away. And most of the time they even work better then vise grips.

I agree. A good size channel lock will remove that like butter.

OP fyi: get used to striped and rusted bolts. Just about any repair you make will have at least one stumbling block. Also when you first start off you will need to get some tools for each project! Harbor freight is a good store for tools.

Sorry guys, was working and now trying again on the plug. Already used vice grips and it wouldn't grip, tried a channel lock already no luck. Using a chisel and hammer right now and tried a pipe wrench already without luck so far
