Re: New to the Ranger scene, need some help picking one out
Your probably gona want a newer ranger. 2001-11. XLT ex-tended cab 4.0. They're great trucks. Gas mpg is kinda blah. But definatly look for a nice newer on. There are soooo many mods you can do to a ranger. But for a newer one with lower miles and 4.0. Your looking round $10,000.
Best of Luck

Re: New to the Ranger scene, need some help picking one out
Interesting, In the short time I've been on FRF the choice of engine size depends on what you expect the truck to do...
Need a truck upgrade for daily comfort and power...get the F150.
Need power and love the ranger size...do a 5.0 swap or turbo kit and tune.
Want good stock performance...get a 4.0 and take some bends out of the exhaust.
Want great gas mileage...get a 2.3 with a 5sp.
Want something in between and more available on the used market...look at the 3.0
Obviously a Great Lil truck that fits all kinds of uses...just figure out yours and be patient.

4.0 has plenty of power. Most people can't do a 5.0 swap whether they are able to do it or not.
3.0 isn't a bad engine, gets better gas mileage than the 4.0 but its a bit underpowered. So may as well hold out a while for a 4.0 to come along.

Re: New to the Ranger scene, need some help picking one out
Maybe I just am not able to read the room...
we went from the OP asking for an opinion about a $2k truck so the primary car is not pressed into hauling occasional stuff...to a mention of an engine swap then a few mentions of installing a supercharger kit for more than the trucks worth to a $10,000 budget.
That'd make me confused....lol

Re: New to the Ranger scene, need some help picking one out
Well the OP said mods COULD happen so I gave a mod idea of the supercharger than said that for what they want a 3.0 or even 2.3/5 would be fine. But the 4.0 would be the best engine to look for.

Re: New to the Ranger scene, need some help picking one out
Not looking to turbo anything at the moment, MAYBE the focus later on. The ranger would probably left alone performance wise, maybe some cosmetic upgrades. Thank you guys for all your suggestions though, it's nice to know y'all are just as cool as most of the focus people.
I found this one on CL, and despite being way outside my price range... it looks amazing! I could find the money if you guys think it'll hold up. I definitely like the idea of the extended cab too, plus it has the 4.0 and it's automatic.

that truck is way overpriced, and was likely wrecked at one point... it has a 2wd xlt grill and bumper
