cab swap VS no cab swap?? - Page 3

My suggestion go for a cab that was already a stick shift, saves you a lot of hard times making sure you cut in the right spot, but it might have a panel that you can take out for a stick also, IDK this for sure. Get a cab with as many parts as you can up front so you don't have to nickel and dime your way to finishing the cab and the doors will have the factory seal and set up on the body lines with the doors.

i put a new cab on my 01 ranger. it was a cab of an automatic truck but it had a plate held by 4 screws in the floor where the gear shift for a manual would go. i would think it would be the same for your cab

Yeah....98+ reg cabs are the same....the only differences between the auto and manual trucks are the pedal assy and the steering column, which you might not get anyway. The holes in the floors are the same......the inspection covers are the same(but one for manual one for auto), etc.... Auto cab is easily swappable to a manual using parts you've already got. Wiring may or may not be different. If it were me, I'd be removing your dash and taking your existing harness out and putting it in the new cab.

Personally, I'd go for the cab with doors.

If you do cut the cab up, chop the top and make it a little shorter...just to be different...Or go convertable...That would be different.

Basicly try to get a cab of the same year with doors. It will be alot easier than your first suggestion of "trying" to repair a roof. To repair a roof costs alot of money and takes alot of time. You're basicly chopping the top and before you do try to repair it you'll have to remove everything and basicly build a full cage to brace it. Cab swap would be the way to go and I'd talk to Shane about this because he's more exp. than I am concerning bodywork on these types of trucks. I'm more of an old school truck like the 30's to 50's type.

this seems like so much work.. idk if i can pull it off... Im still learning basic crap....

Take pictures as you disassemble the cab, will help you lay the harness in the new cab in the correct spots. This isn't as hard as you think it might, but it is time consuming and tedious in talking to another buddy that did a cab swap on an Dodge.

I just had a thought.. Maybe you could video tape everything. Like set a tripod up in the bed and shoot it through the back window. so it can see everything. i dunnno. just a thought. it could be totally stupid. i dunno. i've never put a new cab on. i'm not that good. haha. just thought i'd throw that out there.

I'm not going to say it's a stupid idea lol That sounds smart enough for me lol. Biggest thing is to make sure it all gets back in the right spots, so no fires and no breaking lol

Actually the video idea might not be a bad idea. That way if you get stuck on something and for some unforseen reason something didn't get labled you'd have something to fall back on. At that point all you'd have to do is watch the video to what goes where.

That's one of the biggest mistakes. People who set out to do a project don't take everything into account which at one point we were all guilty of at one time or another. IMO, that's the best way you learn. Learn by doing. Do research, ask questions and plan everything out in detail ahead of time.
