Default Re: Anyone else wonder why fuel milage is so bad?

As a rule of thumb most 1/4 tons with a V-6 will average about the same mileage as a 1/2 ton with a V-8. This is intentional to get people to buy a 1/2 ton, the profit margins are better on them. On the other hand, the reasons are that most 1/4ton trucks are built heavier than their 1/2 ton counterparts, and have fewer mileage saving features and technology on them. Most 1/4ton trucks use a throttle cable vs drive by wire, most have a clutch fan, most have cast iron control arms vs aluminium, the sheet metal tends to be thicker, they have auto transmissions with fewer gears, 4WD systems tend to live axle. All of this increases fuel economy.

Are you guys serious with 12-14mpg? I have a 96 ford ranger and I can get about 360 miles before I have to fill up. And that's leaving two gallons in the tank. Right now I'm at 215 miles and the needle is hovering over the halfway mark. Granted the last half seems to go away faster than the first, but I'm still averaging 18-20mpg on a 20 year old ranger.
