Kind of...A posi diverts a percentage of power from the spinning wheel the the not spinning wheel via gears (a Detroit/Torsen LSD) or clutches (a gov-lok, power-lok, trak-lok etc) it is not a true 50/50 distribution like a locker would allow.

The biggest downside being in an ultra low traction scenario such as one wheel in the air only the wheel without traction will spin. Sometimes you can help the LSD out by riding the brakes in that scenario, but for most rock crawlers an LSD/Posi is no better than an open differential.

Get some weight. It'll help. (Depending on your tires)

I'm running 2WD until my hubs gets here. I threw 5 bags from wall mart in the back and it made a world of difference for me

All I know is that 3.0's clutches are a bitch to bleed. And should be done by someone who has worked on fords & is fimilar with Rangers. Which I believe the inline4s and 3.0s have the same tranny which may be why, the 4.0s has that M5OD-R1HD aka HEAVY DUTY.

dont mind the rear wheel, it may look like a bent axle, but its really flexed :P

Like others stated, it's the cost of all the extra stuff that comes with the package. A limited slip unit costs about $450-$600, so isn't too expensive in itself.

As far as FWD vehicles getting stuck or having trouble, most people feel that All Season tires are all that they need and generally, they are correct until they get weather like yesterday. They they are a hazard to everyone else on the road. I have winter tires on all my vehicles, so even the old truck does ok with an open differential but with the hills around here, it can be challenging if you don't know what you are doing. I almost got stuck once and things got a little squirrelly a couple times.
