Ohh grit. We use grit on our driveway. Salt is what kills everything in the winter though.

Same here. Salt every where. I use medium sand on the walks myself. If the walks freeze, the sand acts like anti-skid and you can sweep a lot of it back up for reuse when it's dry.

I really wished that the DOT wouldn't use salt on the roads, instead find something else that will do the same thing and not ruin vehicles.

decided to sea foam it through the brake booster, crazy black smoke came out for like 3 seconds then it was cleared, not even white smoke, guess it's pretty clean.

The road crews overdo it here too (at least the cities that do salt). Some cities lack the funds, while some only do the main roads. My suburb gets done pretty well. Unfortunately, I live in an apt. complex and it is hit-or-miss. The storm we received Friday was preceded by rain, so there is still an icy layer on the ground.

Calcium chloride is an alternative but is very costly (and still requires salt to mix-in). Also, our state DOT drivers use a liquid de-icer, but again salt is a relatively inexpensive method. Last, sand only helps to grip and not melt the snow and ice, so until an alternative can be found that is readily available, inexpensive, and effective salt will be needed.
