Re: What did you do to your ranger today thread
Well I bought a set of wheels and Tires off of craigslist last week. When I went to buy them I was going to take one wheel off and see if they fit. I have the spline lug nuts (Bought Truck last week also and would never have used the splines) and the key broke on the 3rd nut So I put the lugs back on and tightened them enough to get home. I went ahead and bought the wheels( Polished aluminum 10 holes) because they came off a Ranger so I figured they would fit. After 2 full days of working on these wheels , Applying Tal Strip 2 to get the old peeling clear coat off and sanding /painting them flat black , I took them up to Discount tire to have them Balanced and put on. About 20 mins of waiting the mechanic comes in and says "They don't fit". I was PO'd.! The lug pattern matched up but the center hole was about a 1/4" too small. After brainstorming I went and bought a carbide burr bit and got to cutting out the lip in the center hole. It was a bear! It took me about an hr and 1/2 on each wheel of steady cutting. Finally put them on the truck today.
Then I took the truck for a test drive to see if the New tires and wheels made a big difference. They did, she rolls down the road smooth now. Unfortunately My engine started rattling something fierce @ 70 mph. I pulled over and popped the hood and raised the motor a little and I swear it sounded like a slight rod knock. I was very nervous. I took it to Oriley auto parts to have the codes read. I got 171 174 lean on bank 1 and 2 and a Camshaft position sensor code. I bought the sensor.syncronizer/ sync tool to tackle that tomorrow. SMH
My Dad is a master mechanic but he is in a different city. He thinks it's the timing chain causing a cam pos sensor reading. But he said to go ahead and replace the Sync and sensor and clear the codes and then check the codes again and if it throws a cps code again then it's definitely the timing chain. I should have bought another 2.3!! That was my last Ranger and it had 239k on it and the only thing I ever had to do to it was the Mass Air Flow sensor..

Washed, rubbing compound, polished and waxed, and tire dressing. Tomorrow will be installing clear parking/corner lenses once they arrive.
