Default Cooling system dropped part in hose

Joe mechanic here was changing his overflow reservoir. I took the old one out and there was an aluminum stiffener between the drain and the return hose to the engine block. The stiffener was about 2 inches long and hollow and you could bend it easily. Long story short . . . I dropped this into the return hose and turned the engine on. This will not be good. What do I do? Will this be a problem? I have a 2001 2.3 Ranger with broken a/c. It has 116K on it.

So that stiffener is in the hose that it would normally attach to when installed? You could try taking the fender cover off and fill the system with water and try to flush it out. Or fish a small flexible claw/parts grabber and try to remove it. It will be unlikely that it causes any tremendous damage if it ends up anywhere, but may cause a clog in one of your heater return hoses. So if you end up with normal engine heat, but poor heater performance, this is likely what happened. It will eventually either get destroyed by the water pump impeller, or will get eroded away via corrosion.

FWIW, it will probably end up in the radiator as the engine is not a reverse flow system. Its the next step in the coolant's journey.

Thanks, Turismo22. I have a mechanic looking at it now but I feel better that it is not dangerous.
