Exclamation 4x2 TO 4x4 CONVERSION 2004 Ranger

i own a 2004 ford ranger 4x2, on 30x9.5x15 firestone destination a/ts and everytime i try and go offroading i get nowhere, well it was my grandfathers truck so i have alot of sentimental value with this truck and thats the only reason im not selling it and buting a 4x4 ranger, im thinking about buying a 2004 4x4 ranger that was deemed totalled and maybe doing a body swap, does this sound at all possible? or maybe just swap all the 4x4 drivetrain components? what is the most logical, please help i need to know what my best bet is!

depends what you have to work with currently. Is your truck coil spring or torsion bar? If torsion bar you can swap the 4x4 components. If coil sprung you are kinda SOL unless you swap your body on a 4x4 frame and at that point it just seems more logical to go buy a 4x4 ranger.

Last option. Solid axle swap

ok i mean i think its a coil front suspension, but i could get a 4x4 totalled ranger with limited damage and its a 4x4 same year and everything but bigger engine and drivetrain is 4x4 for around $300 would it be logical at all to do a body swap? would it be easy or would it be a huge project?

Depending on what caused the insurance company to consider the 4x4 totaled you need to make sure that the frame is straight not tweaked. And fix it instead of tearing apart your sentimental ride to get you up the trails.

If it had all the sentimental value that is what I would do. It would make a good project truck for you to learn about repairing vehicles etc... A skill well worth knowing.

the reason it was deemed totalled was due to the airbags going off and the front end damage + paint would of cost more than the truck was worth, my current 4x2 ranger that was my grandfathers was also totalled when he owned it but his frame was bent and they repaired it, so if anything it couldnt hurt too much more, do you know how i would be able to tell what kind of suspension i have?

if its the same year and all it could be logical. But like said you have to know why its totaled. Tweaked frame id say its not worth it.

Off roading is hard on trucks. Paint and body take alot of abuse. Drive train and suspension take alot of wear also. Why don't you just look for your own 4x4 in decent shape instead of chopping up your grandpas truck? And keep both...

if your truck has bar underneath the truck that runs from where your mirrors are up through the lower control arm its a torsion bar. If your truck has a a big metal coil going up from the lower control arm you have coil springs.

If you want a project, go for it. I swapped my F150 over to 4x4, and it was a pretty big production, even though it was almost 98% bolt on.

I've seen plenty of people here swap cabs and do body lifts. The question isn't whether or not you can do it. It's not even a matter of is it worth it. What it finally comes down to, is how bad do you want to do it?

Your best bet is to just swap your body onto the other frame. The problem you'll run into even with that is with the GEM modules, and the wiring.

it is the exact same year as my truck, i mean i really badly want to do it the reason i wouldnt want to get another truck is because i already have this pickup and like a crossover for gas milege, i want one pickup i can use on trails and occassional summer driving i found a donor truck for around 300-350 delivered to my house with the bigger engine and everything, how difficult was it to switch everything over? and from my knowlege there is no frame tweaking only front end damage and airbags going off

My F150 is a 1980, so it's a slightly different ballpark. Even on it, I had to swap transmissions, the transmission cross-member, cut the hole in the floor for the transmission inspection cover, swap in the new axle beams, run the 4x4 indicator switch wire into the cab, swap drive shafts, add the rear lift blocks, and there were probably a few other things I don't remember. I also ended up swapping the engine and interior in that truck, so aside from the paint, frame, and body, it's pretty much a different truck.

On your Ranger, swapping your current frame to accept 4x4 parts is a no-go. It's not even remotely worth it. By the time you cut all the 4x2 stuff off of your frame, you might as well swap in a straight axle instead of messing with the stock IFS D35 that requires different cross-members and mounting points.

And that's why it would be best to just swap the frames.

Now, if your truck was an Edge 4x2 like my Ranger, they use the same frame as the 4x4 trucks, and so bolting in the 4x4 stuff is relatively easy.

so would i be able to take the current body off my 4x2 ranger its an XLT btw and drop that on the engine and chassis of the 4x4? than i wouldnt have to swap anything because im pretty sure it runs, than move over all the components to the 4x2 interior and everything?

Yep. The only thing that would need to be done interior wise is to use the GEM module from the 4x4 Ranger, and the associated wiring harness(es) that go with it. You'd also obviously use the 4x4 Radio Bezel as well.

Swapping the body is the easiest route you can take in your situation.

It depends. Ford calls them Supercab, but it might just be the way they refer to them. If it's an American salvage company, then you should be alright.
