it's the harbor freight MIG flux welder. I though about getting a nice miller unit, but I have no need. I have access to a nice Miller MIG w/gas at work as well as a Miller TIG and ARC welder, so if I need anything more than my HF one I can weld it at work. This one has been running strong for about a year now, and I purchased the 2 year warranty plan on it, so if it breaks I bring it back and get a new one. I am using Miller wire though, I have both .030 and .035, but 99% of the time I use the .030. I do have a fancy Snap-On welding helmet though which helps a ton! lol

Thanks for postin this! I happen to have a few 55 Gallon drums layin around from the ole' diesel shop. Me and my buddies wanted to turn 'em into BBQs, so were probably gonna use your thread as a sort of "template". Or better words, a slight guide ^.^

Great work on the grill btw! Give her a shot of engine block enamel and she'll be lookin fine!

made some more progress on the BBQ:

welded 6" locking casters to one side and just cut pieces of angle to make the feet on the other (welder was set on to too low a temp in these pics):

I got all of the wood stained, and I countersunk all of the screws for the handle, filled all gaps with flexible/stainable wood filler and made it look like one piece with not bolts showing.

I also sanded and wire-wheeled inside and out to prep for paint. All of the shelf mounts, as well as the base will be standard BBQ flat black, while the actual bbq will be a flat dark green. I ordered some stove paint which was pricey, but I figured since this BBQ hasn't really cost me anything, I can make it look nice. Plus, the paint is rated up to 1200* and does not require baking like exhaust paint. I also ordered a thermometer which will be bolted to the center of the lid. Still need to reshape the metal a bit to make it close evenly with no gaps...

OK fast forward 2 months an we're back on track with the bbq! I got side tracked because my wife wanted to get some patio furniture and of course I couldn't just buy some so so made some!

table:

chairs (before they were stained):

but I got to prime the BBQ today, I use Rustoleum high heat primer (it is rated for 2000*). I have to say it is the weirdest primer I have ever used. When you spray it, it almost looks like it's gray primer with clear mixed (the clear part I'm assuming is the ceramic part of the coating). I ended up using 4 cans for those of you that are wondering, and couple probably use 2 more to get a perfect finish, but because of cost and I was pretty happy with the evenness and everything I opted not to and only put on 2 coats.

After 1 coat:

After 2 coats:

I have to wait 1 more hour before I can bake it, but I put in some charcoal inside (about 25 pieces) to get it up to 250*, then you have to let it cool, and then add more charcoal to get it up to 600* per directions on the can. Luckily the top coat (which is going to be a hunter green) is not going to need any baking so I'm looking forward to using this thing soon!!!!

It's going to be done today! A roll of tape and a newspaper later and here's where we are at:

I already painted the "barrel" area and just need to paint everything else today. Overall I'm really happy with this bbq paint. It goes on smooth and dries very quickly. The green color needed much more coats than the black to cover the primer, but I was doing light coats about 20 min apart with 70-75 degree weather. As far as paint goes:

4 cans of primer
6 cans of green bbq paint
2 cans of black bbq paint

will post pics when fully dry and finished.
