Help me design a rack to haul a boat
Today I picked up a 14' aluminum boat, and I want help designing a rack so that I can haul the boat above the cab/bed. I've got a tool box in my bed, so this pretty much rules out a traditional ladder rack, but I would consider one if a better option isn't found. I will likely have to build this rack out of wood because I do not have access to a welder. Here are some pictures to help you guys out.
Here is a good side view for drawing purposes.
Here is the truck with my tool box installed.
The boat.

Re: Help me design a rack to haul a boat
Here is my first idea. Pretty much straight forward, but I would put a pad between the cab roof and frame to prevent scratches.

Re: Help me design a rack to haul a boat
Looks like you pretty much have it figured out, the only thing I would add was maybe some diagonal supports connecting the front legs to the part of the frame over the cab so that you don't stress the connection point over time.

Re: Help me design a rack to haul a boat
I have, but I will already be pulling another trailer. Does anyone know if a ladder rack off of an S10 would fit? I found this on CL.

Re: Help me design a rack to haul a boat
Wood wont be strong enough, and if you do make it strong enough it will be so over built it will look stupid.I know because i just went through this.I also had a tool box and what i did was buy an adjustable rack off ebay and modify it so the tool box still fit.Real cheap and looked good, actually probly cheaper than you can build one from wood.
----------
Here is a pic of the rack,i cant find one after i modded it but all i did was cut off the front gusset, the rack went on first then the tool box mounted on top of that and was bolted to the bed sides right through the rack as well.It worked great.I would love to sell it to you but i would want $125 for it and the shipping would kill you. They sell them here at Princess auto so i am sure they are out there but like i said i got this one off Ebay.

Re: Help me design a rack to haul a boat
seriously, that could work out, Boat is 14', 6' on the bed, support it out to 10' overhang 4'. As long as the trailer tonge is long enough to clear, I dont see why not.

Check your local laws, here that would be illegal, too much overhang. Not to mention the trailer sway if it had any weight at all.
