Default Bike Rack on bedrails (read to understand)

the "professionals" say it cant be done and i honestly dont see why not! now this is a shot in the air project that i may or may not do since when done ill only be able to haul 2 bikes which means ill still need my other methods of hauling bikes. ANYWAYS

it seems to be the bedrail is solid enough for

my preferred method would be the third one and i want to mont them to the bedrails WITHOUT the cargo roof bars (to avoid confusion that would be this system....)

because it has the bars going across.

this system would be fairly permenant which is completely fine with me. now, why couldnt i do this with maybe half an inch of metal under the bedrail where the screws go to help reinforce the rack? i could drill holed into the track to the bedrail and ofc the fork mounts, the only issue i see is that the fork mount might be too big and will sit on the curve of body(but a shingle can fix that)

opinions? advice?

like this!!

but directly on top of the bedrail

and i figured itd be good to add the link...lol

that would be awesome! i dont see why you wouldnt be able to do it, just add some reinforcement like you said and you would be set. the only problem i see would be the mounts not fitting inside the bedrail, but im sure they could be modified.

i do however think the one i posted is ugly ISH, sinc it sticks out of the truck and that makes the handlebars stick out even more. dangerous shit. probably makes the car about a foot wider

exactly like i said with the fork mounts not fitting inside it but the track should sit right on it and since i use mtb bikes not road bikes, i can use giant bolts in the tracks and the tire wont sit on the bolt anyway

----------

id have to get a flatter track tho, similar to the tracks shown on the white chevy

i agree, it puts too much outward force on the bedrail metal. its not made to take that. just get a hitch reciever bike rack.

I think it you make a triangle reinforcement that goes down the inside of the bed it would take a lot of pressure off the red rails. I see where edgeman is coming from. maybe you can make an aluminum plate that would hook the top of the bikes together and another one that would mount to the bed rails or bike mount together

Cantilevering something off the bed rails will break something, or several things. I agree with edgeman on that. You'll notice in both the pictures where the bike is on the side, it is not cantilevered. The first one has the front fork on the front wall of the bed. And the second on has the cap providing lateral support. And neither stick out more than a few inches to the side at most.

I the last picture above mine is awesome.
