Im getting one right now for my other mag lite. I got a new one for xmas, that LED is amazingly bright! Time to upgrade the other one!

I've seen the led conversion bulbs, but using one will likely eliminate your ability to control the beam (wide/narrow). They'll last a long time & be very bright but they probably won't have the throw (distance) as the regular bulbs.

I got my bulbs on clearance at WalMart a year or so ago when they were changing the packaging. My bulbs were like $1.50 each & the same bulb in the new package was almost $4 each.

I've also used 2d bulbs (3v) in 3d lights (4.5v) they will be brighter, but they won't last nearly as long.

Lowe's has the bulbs & led's too, but theirs are always a lot higher than WallyWorld.

Thanks buggman I deff want something thats gonna last. I do want something bright. But I guess I can't get both worlds.

I can say this, I have two mag lite right now, one old, one new. I like the new one 1000x over the old. After comparing the two side by side, there is no comparison. The new one will light up at least 15' in front of ya, thats all I need and then its just so much more powerful and brighter. I mean, your not using your MAG for deer shining, so I guess you don't need it to shine to far anyhow...? Its like one of those things, you don't know what your missing until you have it, before I got my new one I was content with the old one, now that I see the diff. Im sold on the LED. I payed for mine on evil bay 3 min. ago. I can't wait to get it!

My 2d bulb lasted me about 15 years before it finally burned out in my 2d light... they were plenty bright, but I think the newer Krypton bulbs I have now are a little brighter. Don't know how long they'll last, but I've had them for a couple years now.

For close work, like under the dash, under the hood, or anything less than 10' away, I grab one of my small 9 - 15 led flashlights. They put out a TON of light close-up, the AAA batteries actually last a long time. If I need to see 15' away, I grab a 2d or 3d maglight though.

The LED conversion is no where near what the newer MAG-LED's are. The brightness just isnt' there in the conversion in my opinion. You should be able to order a replacement bulb pretty cheap though. I haven't seen them at walmart in a while, but if you go online or to a different chain store as stated above you should be able to get one.

So! The verdect is in!!! Last week I purchased the LED replacment bulb for my 3 D-cell Mag lite. WOW! I am so NOT impressed with this!!! Here are some pic for our viewers pleasure! lol

First pic:

On the left: Black Old style Mag lite 3 D-cell.

One the right: Red New Mag lite LED 2 D-cell.

Second pic: ceiling shot at 3:50pm with the ceiling light on.

Left: Black Mag with Upgraded LED light.

Right: Red Mag with Factory LED light.

Both MAG's have brand new Energizer batterys.

$10 on ebay...! I wrote the seller and told him I was not happy with the light. In the add it showed that the light was bright like my NEW mag lite. Ha, far from it. It is no brighter than the orginal bulb, just white!

So no benefits to buying a new LED Maglite? Just get a regular one and it'll be better?

no no, a new LED mag lite that comes with an led is good to go, that is the brite one in my pic. The replacement LEDs to convert older lite over is no good.
