Just got this craftsman lathe for free. No motor or tool holder. ANybody know anything about it? Is it worth saving and using. Any idea where a good place to get parts is. Im gonna start checking ebay and craigslist. BTW really never used one but hey how hard can it be right?

the toolholder should be no problem, the slot should be a standard size so any standard toolholder should work in it. the motor and pully might be the tough part but you have the right idea with ebay. craigslist might be a good place to look as well.

you definitely got a good deal there those old craftsman lathes are great little ones. any tool holder will work they are all universal for the most part. ebay you should be able to find the motor and pulley.

here is a link to MSC industrial supply. they are one of the largest machine suppliers in the country. i use them to look up tool names and prices and sometimes order from them. great company. if you want you might be able to get a free catalog from them.

as for adapting a motor, that shouldnt be too tough. pick out what motor you wanna use and start making brackets to hold it. find a v-belt thats a pretty common size and make all your motor mounts very adjustable.

once you get your lathe running then you have to learn how you use it. thats not hard it just takes time and patience. and dont get mad if you screw up a part, it happends to all machinists

Atlas/Clausing in Kalamazoo, Michigan made 6" and 12" lathes that were also sold by Sears under the Craftsman name and that is the smaller one. They've been out of production for about 30 years. For parts, search those names on eBay and Google.

You're going to need a 3 or 4 jaw chuck. The 4 jaw is best IMO. Also it appears the live center (or dead center) for the tail stock is in the head spindle hole. The cost of a chuck may be a bit pricey.

4 jaw chucks are only good if you plan on doing non concentric work. If you are trying to make something concentric they are a pain to adjust on center. As for motor you could probably go find just about any used motor and use it since it is a pulley system.

How tight is it? Is there a lot of slop in the gears and stuff of the cross-slide?
Someone probably stripped it of its good parts (i.e. motor, chuck, and tool holder), then junked it. Obviously, someone did it for a reason.

Oh, and 4 jaw chucks aren't that bad to set up work in, just takes a little long and is actually more precise if you're doing accurate work.

X2, i prefer a 4 jaw over a 3 jaw. a few minutes with an indicator and you done, its not hard and its more versital than a 3 jaw.

I am a machine tool re-builder by training although I haven't done any rebuilding in years I would say you got yourself a nice little lathe there. Search around you should be able to find parts for it. Have you contacted Sears they are pretty good at having parts for a lot of there older stuff. First thing I would do is get a manual for it and start searching for replacement parts, lead screws and nuts are available. Along with many other parts.
